Modric’s POVRoderic Ashbourne smiled like a man who had never once been forced to explain himself. That irritated me before he even spoke. We were standing inside one of the High Moon Council’s smaller judicial chambers, away from the public galleries. Mary Ann sat beside our legal representative. Kylian stood near the back wall. Councilwoman Elena and two investigators from the ethics chamber had taken the opposite side.Roderic arrived with four lawyers.Of course he did.He was older than me, perhaps in his early fifties, broad-shouldered, silver-haired at the temples, and dressed in the formal black-and-gold colors of Ashbourne Pack. His family was old.Very old.One of the names Viktor had given us when we first uncovered the Sovereign Houses. And according to the financial records recovered through Velvera’s information, Roderic was also one of the few major Sovereign House figures whose money still connected directly to the political network. Not violence. Not assassination.N

Mary Ann’s POVBy sunset, Ironclaw smelled like wildflowers and food. Not politics. Not war.Not blood. Not fear. For once, the wolves arriving through our gates were not soldiers coming to defend us or council representatives carrying another problem. They were guests.Wedding guests.I stood on the balcony outside the Luna Wing and watched another group of Nightveil families enter the grounds.Several children carried baskets overflowing with wildflowers.I smiled.Apparently, word had spread that I refused expensive decorations.Nightveil had taken that as a challenge. They had arrived with flowers from nearly every part of their territory.Purple moonbells.Silverleaf blossoms.Tiny white flowers that grew along the northern hills.Dark blue nightstars. No elaborate arrangements. No imported roses.Just flowers people had picked from their own land.I loved them.“Stop moving.”I turned.Greta stood behind me holding several pins between her lips while examining the dress hanging

Mary Ann’s POVThe garden did not look like a place where treaties were signed. That was the first thing I noticed. There was no raised throne. No giant Ironclaw banner behind the altar. No Nightveil crown waiting on a cushion. No Mooncrest council seated in a position of honor above everyone else.Instead, the three pack symbols appeared quietly around the garden.Ironclaw’s black wolf.Mooncrest’s silver crescent.Nightveil’s midnight branch.Equal.Separate.None larger than the others.Exactly as I wanted. And everywhere, there were wildflowers. So many wildflowers.Purple moonbells from Mooncrest.Silverleaf blossoms from Nightveil.White forest flowers gathered by Ironclaw children. The combination created a scent so familiar that I stopped near the entrance and laughed softly.Greta turned toward me.“What?”“It smells like me.”She looked around proudly.“That was intentional.”“Of course it was.”“You said wildflowers.”“I did not realize you meant every wildflower in three t

Mary Ann’s POVOur first wedding reception had felt like a council meeting with music.Everyone had watched everyone else.Ironclaw had watched Mooncrest.Mooncrest had watched Ironclaw. The elders had watched Modric and me as though every glance between us needed to confirm that the alliance was working.I had spent most of that night wondering whether my new husband wanted to escape. He had.Tonight, my husband was trying to stop Kylian from telling three packs about the first time he attempted to court me.“And then,” Kylian announced, raising his glass, “our mighty Alpha spent nearly forty minutes choosing a book.”The garden erupted with laughter.I covered my face.Modric stood beside me.“Kylian.”Kylian ignored him.“He had survived assassination attempts.”“Kylian.”“Political rebellions.”“Kylian.”“Silver poisoning.”“That was not me.”“Not relevant.”More laughter.Kylian pointed dramatically toward Modric.“But put this man inside a library and tell him he needs to choose

Mary Ann’s POVSeveral months later.Modric hated the northern cliffs. Not because they were ugly. Not because the journey had been difficult. Not even because I had forced him to leave Ironclaw for an entire week without allowing him to turn the trip into an unofficial inspection of neighboring packs. He hated the wind.“This is unreasonable.”I continued painting.Modric stood several feet behind me with his coat pulled tightly around his body.I smiled.“What is unreasonable?”“The weather.”“It is beautiful.”“It is trying to kill us.”I looked toward the sea.The northern cliffs were exactly as I had imagined them.Perhaps better.Dark rock stretched along the coastline in both directions. Far below us, enormous waves crashed against the cliff walls, leaving white foam across the black stones. The sky was pale. The sea seemed endless.Wild grass covered the land behind us, bending beneath the constant wind.Beautiful.Wild.Free.I dipped my brush into blue paint.“You are a were
