Chapter 1

"I'm here to see the Marquis of Eterna, or the marchioness. Could you please let them know their real son is here? I was switched at birth 16 years ago," the young man said.On the day Isaac Reed, the true heir of the Reed family, came to reclaim his place, it rained cats and dogs. He just stood there at the door, straight as a rod.The thin, coarse cotton shirt clung to his body, outlining a painfully skinny frame of jutting bones. Rainwater streamed down his hair, which had clumped into wet strands, and his face was blue from the cold. Only his eyes were shockingly bright. As the gatekeeper, Jim Green, put it, "That kid must have had a screw loose. Who runs over to someone's house in a downpour like that? Besides, as if I would bring him to the marquis and marchioness when he's sopping wet. What if he catches something and spreads it to the whole household?"Jim stared at Isaac, looking torn.Ever since several more heirs had turned up, a few young men came by each month, claimi

Chapter 2

As for why it ended up being nine sons… The master had just stroked his beard and said it was a secret. With so many "real heirs" and a bunch of impostors claiming to be the real deal popping up so often, it only made me, the fake heir who'd grown up by Mother and Father's side, all the more precious. On top of that, I had a sweet tongue and said all the right things. It was only natural that I was favored. While Mother and I spoke, Jean returned with the bowl.Yes, Isaac didn't even get the chance to meet Mother. The household already had a fully streamlined process to test kinship now.Mother looked at the two drops of blood fusing in the bowl and shed tears of relief. Then, she said, "Hurry up and arrange a courtyard for Isaac, my ninth son! Pass down the order—if anyone else comes claiming to be my son in the future, chase them all away!"…Isaac was brought to Mother's courtyard after being cleaned and made presentable. Why just the courtyard and not a room, where it was

Chapter 3

Mother's expression turned downright frosty as she pulled me behind her protectively."Isaac, have you lost your mind? What's all this talk about coming back and fakes? If your brothers are fakes despite being able to prove their blood ties with me, then what are you? Jean, take Isaac to his quarters. Do not let him out unless I say so! And get a physician to examine his head!""I'm not going!" Isaac yelled. "I'm not sick! Mother, you have to believe me! Please!"Two servants grabbed Isaac, one on each side. He thrashed wildly, kicking and swinging his fists."Jared Reed, I hope you die a horrible death! Just you wait! I won't let you off! I'm the real heir! I'm the—"Isaac's words revealed a lot. Mother couldn't make heads or tails of it, but I was widely read. I immediately knew what he meant—he had been reborn.Well, well. A story about real and fake heirs had just turned into a reborn real heir going up against a transmigrated fake heir. How exciting.…After being confine

Chapter 4

From the moment I transmigrated here, I'd deliberately kept my distance from Kiana. At the same time, I was worried she might still be used in someone else's scheme. In my opinion, a proper young lady from such a noble household should know how to defend herself. And so, ever since I was a child, I'd been brainwashing my parents.I told them a good woman should set her sights on the world and defend the nation. I told them that if our marquisate didn't rack up some real military merit soon, we wouldn't be able to keep our title.I reminded them that back in Grandmother's generation, she'd been a heroine in her own right, riding into battle with Grandfather and making a name for herself on the battlefield.I told them that even though Grandfather's spear had been passed down to my uncle, who guarded the frontier, Grandmother's spear was gathering dust. That was just too much of an insult to her legacy.Rumor had it that on that very night, Father actually dreamed of Grandmother cha

Chapter 5

Isaac's eyes widened, like he'd seen a ghost. Even his previously weak voice suddenly rang out loud and clear."How are you the crown prince? And how are you the eldest princess? You're supposed to be the second princess!"Caleb's eyebrows arched in surprise. "If I'm not the crown prince, then who is?"Things were not unfolding the way Isaac had expected. Even the crown prince and the princess weren't the same people he remembered. That left him at a loss.At Caleb's signal, the guard beside him took the curse doll from Isaac's hands. Caleb read the names written on it. "Lillian Linden. Cameron Linden."A strange look flashed through Leonora's eyes. She said slowly, "Before I was born, Mother did indeed have another daughter, but she was stillborn. Father gravher the name Lillian. How did you know that?"Caleb toyed with the doll, his lips curved in a half-smirk. "So, it seems that Mr. Isaac thinks someone else should've been the crown prince.""Your Highness, please have mercy!

Chapter 6

Seeing Leonora's pretty face so close to mine and the worry hidden in her eyes, I smiled. "With you here, what do I have to be afraid of?"The tips of her ears flushed an almost imperceptible shade of red, and she huffed, feigning annoyance. "I'm going with Caleb to handle the aftermath."I watched her walk away, then glanced at my brothers, who were waggling their eyebrows. I was in an excellent mood.…By the time Father, who was entertaining guests in the front hall, got word, Isaac had already been thrown into prison."I think the crown prince was right. This person claiming to be Isaac must be an impostor! How could we possibly have a son this insane when the two of us are of such good character?"Father patted his chest, still shaken after hearing Mother recount what had happened."I can't believe he pulled a stunt with a curse doll. Didn't he think about how he would drag the whole family down with him? Good thing Princess Leonora is my future daughter-in-law."As he spo

Chapter 7

Isaac even egged His Majesty on, claiming that with all the "children of destiny" gathered at Reed Manor, their combined fortune might threaten the imperial mandate itself. He suggested sending my brothers to stand guard around the late emperor's mausoleum year-round to "bless the imperial family".When the news reached our family, Mother worked herself into another fit. She snapped, "He's heartless! He won't even spare his own brothers!"I reached over and gently patted her back. "Don't worry, Mother. He won't amount to anything."The next day, I submitted a request to enter the palace to meet Caleb. He and I had always been on good terms—he was clear-headed, and he knew very well that his position as heir apparent was secure in no small part thanks to me, his future brother-in-law.Originally, His Majesty had wanted to make the second prince, Cameron, son of the empress, the heir. While I was in Aurum Hall, Caleb's chambers, I brought up something as if by accident."Recently,

Chapter 8

Isaac and Cameron had gone to such great lengths, pulling strings and reaching out to so many people to stir things up. Yet the result was nothing like what Isaac had imagined. It made him want to pull his hair out.Gareth snacked on nuts as he laughed and told us that Isaac had gotten so angry the corner of his mouth had broken out in blisters. In the blink of an eye, it was the 2nd of February. According to tradition, His Majesty, along with the princes and princesses, had to go to the imperial estate on the outskirts of the capital to offer sacrifices to the heavens and pray for favorable weather and a bountiful harvest.Unfortunately, an urgent report arrived from the northern border. A large barbarian tribe was on the move and looked ready to attack the passes at any moment. The people on the frontier were panicked, and the situation was on a knife's edge.At court, the officials argued back and forth. They all believed that at such a critical juncture, someone of high enough

Chapter 9

Isaac shouted hysterically, "You deserve to rot in hell, Jared! You'll never measure up to me! I'm the true heir of the marquisate!"Then, he burst into wild laughter. "You know what? I've changed my mind. I don't want someone else to kill you anymore. I want you to do it yourself."For each quarter of an hour that you drag this out, I'll kill ten people. Aren't you supposed to be a great patriot who lives and dies for the people? Then kill yourself for your country and your people!""Who are you ordering to kill himself?"Just then, a deafening war cry rolled in from the distance. Caleb had finally arrived.Cameron whipped around.Caleb, who was supposed to be thousands of miles away, charged toward the rebels in full silver armor, spear in hand. He led his elite troops, every soldier armed to the teeth. They appeared like heavenly troops descending from the sky, closing in and surrounding Cameron's forces."No! No way!" Cameron's eyes practically popped out of their sockets. "

Chapter 10

The rebellion was finally put down, and the dust settled. There was irrefutable evidence of Cameron's uprising. Even though he took his own life, he was still stripped of his royal status and cast out as a commoner. His followers were either purged or punished.Isaac went mad, but I didn't kill him. Ultimately, I still felt guilty toward Father and Mother. I couldn't bring myself to be cruel enough to kill their real son.He was locked away in a hidden cell deep within the palace's Exile Hall. He never had to worry about sustenance, but he would only have madness for company for the rest of his life. The whole thing was a huge blow to His Majesty, and his health declined sharply. He barely managed to hold on for three more years before issuing a decree to pass the throne to Caleb.Caleb ascended the throne and changed the reign title to Everbright.Meanwhile, I turned down the imperial decree to make me chancellor, then happily packed up my belongings and went to marry Leonora.
