It happened fast. One moment the warehouse had the organized, purposeful activity of official response — police moving through the space, Harris briefing someone near the northern entrance, a paramedic crouching beside Maya with a small penlight checking her pupils — and the next moment Clara moved. Not toward the exit.Toward the floor. The lighter was where she had dropped it — three feet from where the police officer was guiding her toward the bay doors, close enough that the lunge was fast and the officer wasn't fast enough and Clara's fingers closed around the lighter before anyone in the room had fully processed that she was moving."Clara—" Sebastian started. She struck the wheel. The flame caught. She dropped it into the petrol. The ignition was not the explosion — the explosion came a fraction of a second later, when the flame reached the edge of the puddle and found the trail that had spread further than anyone had assessed in the grey light of the warehouse, running in a th

Seraphina didn't sleep. She sat beside Sebastian's bed through the night with his hand in hers and the monitoring equipment doing its quiet, rhythmic work around them and the recovery room holding its specific, clinical silence, and she watched his face in the low light and thought about nothing in particular and everything simultaneously in the way that only very long nights in very quiet rooms allow. At some point Grace appeared in the doorway."The children are asleep in the family room," she said quietly. "Down the corridor. I'll stay with them.""Thank you," Seraphina said.Grace looked at Sebastian. At Seraphina's hand in his.She said nothing further. She went back to the children.Seraphina stayed. At three in the morning a night nurse came in and checked the monitors and made a note and looked at Seraphina with the specific, professional compassion of someone who had seen this before — the person in the chair, the held hand, the face that had stopped managing itself."You sho

The fingers moved again on the third day.Not the small, almost imperceptible movement of the first night — something more deliberate than that, the specific, effortful quality of a movement being made against resistance, a person reaching toward consciousness from a significant distance and finding, in the reaching, something to reach toward.Seraphina was in the chair when it happened. She had been in the chair a great deal over the three days — not continuously, Grace had enforced a rotation that included the children and meals and four hours of sleep in the family room on a cot that was not comfortable and was considerably better than nothing — but she had been there enough that the chair had taken on the specific, settled quality of a place that had been occupied with purpose. She felt the movement before she saw it.The slight increase in the pressure of his hand against hers. She looked at his hand. She looked at his face. His brow had tightened. Not with pain exactly — or not

Sebastian learned the rhythm of the penthouse in the first week. Not deliberately — he didn't set out to map it, didn't approach it as a project the way Liam approached things, with methodical intention and library books. It simply accumulated, the way knowledge of a space accumulates when you are in it consistently and paying attention, which he was always doing now.He knew that Grace arrived at seven forty-five and left at four thirty and that she made coffee exactly the way Seraphina took it without being asked and that she and Seraphina had developed, over three years, the specific, efficient shorthand of two people who have worked alongside each other long enough to communicate primarily in partial sentences and understood looks. He knew that Maya took twenty minutes longer than Liam to get ready in the mornings and that this was not because she was slower but because she was thorough, and that the extra twenty minutes produced a result — a child entirely ready, nothing forgotte

She made it herself. The formulation had existed in her notes for three years — a herbal ointment, specifically developed for burn recovery, combining compounds she had first worked with in the greenhouse and refined through five years of continued study and the specific, practical motivation of building something that worked rather than something that sold. She had never had a reason to use it before now.She prepared it on a Sunday morning while the twins were with Grace at the park and the penthouse was quiet in the specific, unhurried way it was quiet when it had been emptied of children. The kitchen became a lab — temporary, careful, the organized use of a domestic space for a precise purpose. She had ordered the raw materials through Verve's supply chain three days ago, the botanical extracts and the carrier compounds and the specific, pharmaceutical-grade additives that moved the formulation from a cosmetic product into something with genuine therapeutic application. She worked
