Adrian didn't move. The phone remained against his ear long after the call had ended.Eva watched him carefully."Adrian?"Nothing.She stepped closer."Adrian, look at me."His eyes finally met hers."My mother is alive."Eva nodded slowly."I heard.""I spent ten years believing she was dead."His voice was barely above a whisper."And now she calls me."Eva reached for his hand.He held it immediately."What did she mean when she said they're watching us?""I don't know.""Do you believe her?""Yes."Eva squeezed his fingers."Then we'll figure it out."He looked at her."You say that like it's easy.""It isn't.""Then why aren't you afraid?""I am."She took a breath."I'm just not afraid enough to leave you alone."Something shifted in Adrian's expression. He lifted their joined hands and looked at them."You're becoming very important to me."Eva's heart skipped. She tried to smile."I thought I already was.""You were."He paused."Now it's different."She looked into his eyes.

The drive back to Blackwood Tower was silent.Eva sat beside Adrian, her head resting against the window.Neither of them had spoken since leaving the hidden property. There was too much to process.Margaret was alive.Adrian's father knew they were searching for the truth. And somewhere between all the secrets, someone close to them had betrayed the family.Eva glanced at Adrian. He was staring straight ahead."You're thinking too much."He looked at her."How do you know?""Because you've been staring at the same road for ten minutes."A faint smile appeared."You notice everything.""Only when it concerns you."His expression softened."Eva.""Hm?""I meant what I said."She knew exactly what he meant.About falling in love with her.Her cheeks warmed."I know.""And?"She smiled."I meant what I said too."He reached for her hand.Their fingers intertwined. For a few minutes, neither said anything. Then Daniel's phone rang from the front seat.He answered."Yes?"His expression ch

The room went silent.Eva stared at Daniel. He stared back. For several seconds, nobody moved. Then Daniel slowly lowered his phone."Sir..."Adrian stepped in front of Eva."Don't move."Daniel's expression tightened."You think it was me?""I don't know what to think."Adrian's voice was controlled, but there was something dangerous beneath it.Daniel looked genuinely hurt."After everything I've done for you?""That's exactly why I'm asking."Eva stepped forward."Adrian."He glanced at her."Wait."She looked back at Daniel."Daniel, where were you before we came here?""At the tower.""Doing what?""Checking the security systems."Adrian's eyes narrowed."Who authorized you to do that?""You did.""I didn't."Daniel went quiet.Eva looked between them."Then who did?"Daniel shook his head."I received an instruction through the internal security system."Adrian's expression hardened."Show me."Daniel immediately pulled out his phone. He opened the message. There was no sender.

The alley was empty.Adrian stood staring at the spot where his father had disappeared.Eva watched him quietly. For the first time since she'd met him, he looked completely lost."Adrian."He didn't respond. She stepped closer."Adrian."He finally looked at her."I spent twenty years believing he was dead."Eva didn't know what to say."I'm sorry."He shook his head."I don't want your pity.""It's not pity."His eyes met hers."It's just... I can't imagine what you're feeling."He looked away."Neither can I."Beatrice approached them."We need to leave."Adrian nodded."Back to the estate."Daniel frowned."Sir, your father said the room is there.""I know.""And Richard may be watching.""I know that too."Eva looked at Adrian."Then we go carefully."He nodded. But before they could move, his phone vibrated.A message appeared. You saw him.Adrian's expression hardened.Another message followed. Now you know what happens when you keep digging.Eva's heart sank."Richard?""Proba

Eva froze. Her hand remained inches from the door."Eva?"The voice came again.Soft.Familiar.Impossible.She looked at Adrian."That was my mother."Adrian's expression tightened."I know."Beatrice stepped forward."Don't open it."Eva turned."Why?"Beatrice's face had gone pale."Because that isn't your mother."Another silence. The voice came again."Eva, please."Her heart ached.Even though she knew it couldn't be her mother, hearing that voice was almost enough to make her forget everything else.Adrian gently took her hand."Don't listen.""But how can someone sound exactly like her?""I don't know."Victor moved closer to the door."Neither do I."He examined the edges."There's a speaker hidden somewhere."Eva looked at him."A recording?""Probably."Adrian nodded."Someone wants us to believe she's behind the door."The voice came again."Eva, you have to trust me."Eva swallowed."My mother used to say that."Adrian looked at her."Then that's exactly why they're using
