Chapter 1

It was Tuesday today. By nine in the morning, I had already cleaned out my desk, leaving only one mug behind. It had been a birthday gift from Sharon Solt, my fiancee, last year. On it were printed the words, "World's Best Boyfriend", which was ironic, considering what had happened. Either way, the sight of it was an eyesore to me now.Marcy Grant of the HR department accepted my resignation letter and paused."Simon, are you sure about this? The project bonus will be handed out next month, so if you leave now, that means you just wasted half a year's effort."I lowered my gaze. "I'm sure."Marcy sighed. "Did you talk this over with Sharon? Aren't you two—""Marcy, please just help me follow the usual procedures."Seeing how resolute I was, she stopped trying to talk me out of it.It took a total of 47 steps to get from my work desk to the elevator. As I walked, I thought back to what Sharon had told me the night before she left for her work trip.At the time, she had been bu

Today was the last night I would be staying in our rented apartment. The TV cabinet still held a photo of Sharon and me, taken last year at the beach. She was clad in a white dress, and the sweet smile she had practically lit up her whole face.As I reached out to flip the photo face-down, my fingers trembled slightly. My phone kept vibrating and chiming as Sharon bombarded me with seven text messages, three voice messages, and four missed calls. I neither picked up nor replied to her messages, simply sending her a vague, "I'm busy."She immediately responded with, "Busy with what? I went to see a supplier today. They produce incredibly beautiful porcelain dinnerware, and I got us some. You'll get to use them at our new house."I didn't answer. Our new house? That wouldn't happen.A beat later, she sent me another message. "Why aren't you answering me? Are you angry again? Simon, don't be like that. Danny has been so good today. He helped me carry my bag for the entire day, and

Saturday morning, I was in my new apartment, unpacking, when it started to pour outside.I had only just finished when my phone vibrated where I had placed it on the table. Upon checking it, I saw that Daniel had sent me a photo. The background was that of a luxurious hotel suite. Sharon, clad only in a bathrobe, was asleep on the bed, while Daniel's face loomed close to the camera, a challenging smile curving his lips. There was also a voice message attached, which I played."Simon, Sharon had a bit too much to drink last night and kept tugging on my arm, refusing to let me leave. She told me that you were too boring, that being with you was too mundane and bland, and that she was so much happier with me. Don't be mad, okay? I'm just helping to take care of Sharon. I definitely don't have any ulterior motives."If this had been in the past, I likely would've hopped onto the earliest flight possible and rushed over to settle the score with them. Now, however, I only found their

Sharon's complexion instantly went white."The number is not in service? He actually deactivated the number that he's been using for the past 8 years?"Daniel sidled over, a sliver of smug glee flashing in his eyes."Sharon, I think that Simon is genuinely angry this time. How about I try calling him on my number?"With that, he took out his phone and dialed my work contact. At the same time, I was lounging on the balcony of my new apartment. As the unfamiliar number appeared on my phone screen, I casually answered the call."Simon Lane! You've truly grown bold, haven't you? How dare you cancel your phone number!"Sharon's furious shriek blared over the speakers, causing me to pull my phone further away from my ear. In a calm voice, I answered, "Sharon, I thought I had made myself very clear that I didn't want to see or hear from you again.""Simon, stop with the act already! Danny just brought me back to my hotel room, that's all! Nothing happened between us! Is that really re

I stared down coldly at the hand Daniel was using to grab the sleeve of my suit."Let go."Sharon snorted before walking over to stand before me. "Simon, stop this nonsense of yours. I know you have the contact numbers for a few of Galaxy Corporation's executives, and you were also the one who used those connections to help me in the past, but this time the CEO himself is overseeing the project. Those low-ranking connections of yours have no say in the matter at all."As long as you apologize to me now and promise to stop being so unreasonable in the future, I can consider allowing our wedding next month to proceed as planned."She made it seem like she was doing me a huge favor, her every word and action dripping with condescending arrogance.Beside her, Daniel was eagerly adding fuel to the fire. "That's right, Simon. Sharon is already giving you a way out, so you'd better be grateful for her generosity. If Sharon succeeds in nabbing this project today, she'll be famous througho

The moment I strode into the conference room, all the core executives of the company stood up as a show of respect."Good day, Mr. Lane!"I headed straight for the seat at the head of the table, pulled out the chair, and sat down.Ten minutes later, the door to the conference room was pushed open once more before Sharon and Daniel were ushered in by a staff member.A charming, confident smile was on Sharon's face, while she held the contract in her hands. As she swept a gaze across the faces present and finally noticed me sitting at the head of the table, her smile faltered.Daniel even went as far as to point a finger at me, yelling, "Simon? Why are you sitting in that spot? Security! Quick, call the security and have them detain this fraud!"From my seat at the head of the table, I twirled a black fountain pen.Over a dozen of the company's core executives were present for this meeting, and now, they all stared at Sharon and Daniel as though the duo were fools.Emma's face w

Although Sharon had never met Theodore in person before, she had seen him plastered on the cover of finance magazines or at major business conferences countless times.Theodore was the real person in charge at Galaxy Corporation, the one with the real authority and power. He was a business titan with a net worth in the billions.Yet, here he was, acting so humbly before me, his tone almost sycophantic.Daniel also stopped struggling to get free, slumping to the floor as all the color drained from his face."Mr. Gordon, could you be mistaken? His name is Simon Lane, and he's just a normal employee who deals with coding all day…"That had Theodore's head whipping around so that he could glare daggers at Daniel."Just a normal employee who deals with coding all day? Mr. Lane holds the patent to the world's most advanced AI algorithm! It took Galaxy Corporation begging him for months and offering 10% of our shares before he agreed to come work for us! Not only is he our Chief Technol

Daniel fell completely limp."Mr. Lane! Simon! I was wrong! I truly know that now! It was Sharon! She was the one who seduced me! She made the first move! Last night at the hotel, she told me to send you that photo to piss you off. She said that you were a simp that she couldn't shake no matter how hard she tried!"For the sake of self-preservation, Daniel had no qualms about throwing Sharon under the bus.Sharon's head snapped around as she stared at him in disbelief."Daniel Zugler! You were the one who said that Simon was a good-for-nothing! You even privately told me that you were the heir to a wealthy family, that I would get to enjoy all sorts of luxuries if I got together with you!""Sharon, stop trying to portray yourself as innocent in all this! Have you forgotten how often you insulted Simon? The ugly words you used? Shall I play the voice recordings aloud?" As the two turned on each other, I felt nothing but disgust. So this was the true colors of the woman I had love
