KINGSTONI left the house before Nia came out of her room. After the way Renee looked at us last night, distance was the only option that made sense. I took an early car, sat in the back, and stared out the window without seeing anything. At the office I kept my door open and my head down. When Nia walked onto the marketing floor later, I didn’t look up. She didn’t stop by my office. We both stayed exactly where we were supposed to—polite, professional, careful. It lasted until 10:15am.My assistant knocked once and stuck her head in. “Mr. Carter is here. He’s asked for a short meeting in the main conference room. He wants the marketing team present.”I stood. “Did he say why?”“Only that it’s a formal introduction.”I knew what that meant before I reached the glass doors. The marketing team was already gathering—twelve people, some curious, some bored. Nia stood near the side wall, spine straight, expression neutral. Dad walked in a minute later, calm as always, and the room quieted.
