Chapter 1

"Noelle, you're home early," Jean Lyle said. "Ben and I picked up a butternut squash at the store. Want me to make that soup you love?"Ben Cullen followed her inside. He gave me a polite nod, then headed into the kitchen. When Ben lost his memory, I couldn't bring myself to leave. So I stayed, even though it meant living like a guest in the home he now shared with Jean.I was his real girlfriend, yet I spent every day watching him dote on someone else. Every time they held hands or hugged in front of me, it tore me apart.I kept telling myself that once Ben got his memory back, everything would go back to normal.Six months passed, but Ben's memory never returned. Instead, I discovered something devastating.Ben had fallen in love with Jean.Jean followed my gaze to Ben, who was busy in the kitchen. She leaned closer and lowered her voice. "I'm sorry, Noelle."I looked down and gave a humorless laugh. "Don't be. I'm the one who couldn't help him remember."Jean had no idea B

Chapter 2

Seeing Jean kiss Ben sent a sharp pain through me.She had sworn up and down that she would do her best to keep her distance from him. Whenever I was around, she went out of her way to avoid getting too close.I couldn't remember when that had changed. Now she kissed him without a second thought."I know you're looking out for me, but let's talk about this later. Finding an apartment isn't easy right now," Jean said.Ben had come prepared. "I asked a friend to check out two apartments a few days ago. They're both close to here and to her office."Jean gave in. "Alright. I'll talk to Noelle when she gets back."Fighting back tears, I slowly looked around the home I had decorated for Ben and me to share after we got married. After Ben lost his memory, I went from calling it home to living there as a guest. All my belongings had been moved into the tiny spare bedroom.Within six months, Jean had erased every sign that I had ever lived there. And now Ben wanted me gone.Their laug

Chapter 3

As the elevator descended, I found myself replaying Ben's behavior over the last three months.Looking back, his act hadn't been convincing at all. I just hadn't seen through it because I had blamed every inconsistency on his amnesia.I was so distracted that I followed another passenger off on the OB-GYN floor. By the time I realized my mistake, I was already halfway down the hall.I was about to turn back when I spotted Ben, the last person I expected to see there.Wasn't he supposed to be home making dinner with Jean?I stopped outside the door just as a doctor spoke from inside. "You're eight weeks pregnant. Do you plan to keep the baby?"Jean hadn't even opened her mouth when Ben spoke up from behind her. "Yes. We're keeping it."Ben held the ultrasound report as he pulled Jean into a tight embrace. "Did you hear that? We're having a baby!"He immediately started planning the wedding. "We'll get married before you start showing. I'll call my parents tomorrow so we can star

Ben's threat cut deep, leaving me cold and hollow.I kept my head down so he wouldn't see my tears and did my best to keep my voice steady. "You've got it all wrong. Jean is my best friend. I couldn't be happier for her. Why would you think I'd hurt her?"Ben watched me closely, perhaps trying to figure out whether I knew he had his memory back. After a few seconds, his expression softened. "That's not what I meant. You two are best friends. I'm just saying she'll need you to look out for her."I didn't respond.A little while later, Jean asked me to bring her some ice cream, giving her an excuse to get me alone in the living room. She opened her mouth to speak, then hesitated as tears filled her eyes.Calmly, I asked, "When did it happen?"Jean's face crumpled with guilt as she began to sob. "Ben and I were both drunk that night. I took the morning-after pill, but I still got pregnant. Maybe it was expired or fake."She hadn't told me any of this.Like a fool, I had felt sorr

Chapter 5

Ben seemed surprised that I had actually left so easily. He stood frozen for several minutes, watching me go, then started after me. But Jean called out from the couch."We shouldn't have made Noelle leave this late. She's terrified of the dark, and it's pitch-black outside. Go ask her to come back, or at least drive her to one of those apartments you found."Oh, and before you go, could you grab the ointment for me? My knee is really starting to hurt."She rolled up her pant leg, revealing a badly bruised knee.Ben stopped in his tracks and hurried to her side. "Look how swollen your knee is, and you never said a word. After what she did to you, you're still worried about her?"He flicked her forehead in frustration, as though he hadn't been about to follow me just moments ago.Jean spoke quietly. "I told you, I slipped. It's only a bruise. Besides, I'm used to it."Ben paused. "You're used to it? Has she treated you like this before when I wasn't around?"Jean hesitated, then

Chapter 6

I was about to block Jean when she sent me a message."Ben was the one who insisted that I wear the ring and post the photo. But I promise that once he gets his memory back, I'll disappear and stay out of your lives for good. All I ask is that you let me keep the baby. The baby is innocent."I stared at the message, wondering why she thought any of this would make a difference. The damage had already been done.Ben couldn't have put the ring on her finger if she hadn't let him, and she wouldn't be pregnant if she hadn't slept with him."Whatever is going on between you and Ben has nothing to do with me. We're not friends anymore. Delete my number, and I'll delete yours. Maybe then Ben will stop messaging me to accuse me of mistreating you."I sent the message and deleted her contact without waiting for a reply.I let out a long breath, then focused on wrapping up the handover with my replacement.Mom called me in a panic while I was having dinner. "Did something happen between y

Chapter 7

The buyers asked to see the house early, before the midday heat set in, and Ian agreed. He arrived with the couple while Ben and Jean were still asleep. Using the key I had given him, he let them in and began showing them around. When Ian opened the bedroom door, the noise woke Ben. He took one look at the strangers and quickly pulled the blanket over Jean."You're trespassing! I'm calling the police!"But Ian didn't budge. I had already briefed him on the situation."Ms. Sloan hired us to sell this house. They're interested in buying it."Ben let out a humorless laugh, grabbed his phone from the nightstand, and dialed 911."Now get out! My wife needs to get dressed."Ian merely scoffed and led the couple away to see the rest of the house. After that scene, however, the couple were clearly having second thoughts.Ian immediately gave them his word. "You won't find another house this well renovated in your price range. It's completely move-in ready, so you won't have to spend a

I continued, "You and Jean have been living in my house all this time. I was already generous enough not to kick you out sooner. You can refuse to leave, but I'll have every last thing you own tossed out."As for the apartment you rented, you and Jean can have it."Ben went still. When he finally spoke, his voice was hoarse. "When did you find out I'd gotten my memory back?""It doesn't matter. We were over the moment you faked amnesia to be with Jean."I hung up and blocked his number.Ben stayed on the balcony for a long time. When he finally returned to the living room, his back was hunched. He had faked amnesia because he thought he could have it both ways. Now he was stuck with Jean, with no way back.Jean knew he must have been talking to me. She rushed over, eager to hear what I had said."Well? Did Noelle agree not to sell the house?"Ben was silent for a moment before saying quietly, "Go pack your things."Jean was furious, but with no other choice, she started pack

Mom was so eager to see the drama for herself that she made a special trip to the wedding. She even recorded what happened and sent me the video.Halfway through the ceremony, a stranger stormed onto the stage and snatched the microphone from the emcee."I object!"Everyone looked confused except Jean. Her face went pale, and she quickly covered it as she ducked behind Ben.Ben frowned, convinced that I had sent the man to crash his wedding. He was about to have security throw him out when the man dropped a bombshell."Jean, don't think marrying some sucker willing to raise your bastard means you're rid of me! I'm the baby's real father. No matter how old he gets, he'll still have to call me Dad."Ben's eyes went wide with rage. "What did you just say?"The man laughed in his face. "What, you agreed to marry her without knowing the truth? Do you get off on being cheated on, or are you really that eager to play dad to another man's kid?"Jean clung tightly to Ben's arm, her voic

Chapter 10

Mom's face hardened, and she tried to shut the door. "You're the last person I wanted to see."Ben stuck his foot in the doorway, stopping her from closing it. "I know you were at the wedding. Noelle asked you to go, didn't she? Where is she? I need to see her."Mom planted her hands on her hips and scoffed. "You mailed the invitation to my house, so of course I went to watch the show. Noelle isn't your pet. You don't get to call her over when you want her and throw her aside when you don't."Why don't you go check on Jean and the baby she tried to pass off as yours? Weren't you counting on him to take care of you when you got old?"Mom had always been patient and kind to Ben. She had never spoken to him that way before. He stood there in stunned silence.Mom laughed in his face. "Let me guess. You're here to tell me you mistook Jean for Noelle because of your amnesia, and that Noelle is the one you've loved all along. Do you really think we're stupid enough to buy that, Ben?"T
