Chapter 1

On the way home, I felt completely numb, as if I’d lost my soul.I didn’t have children yet. I hadn’t been able to care for my parents in their old age or see them through their final years. There were still so many things I hadn’t had the chance to do.Why had my wife delayed my treatment? Why had I been struck by this disease when I was still so young?I was furious and ready to confront my wife, but she wasn’t home. With nowhere to vent my anger, I could only curl up on the stairwell and smoke one cigarette after another. It wasn’t until the floor was littered with cigarette butts that I finally managed to calm down.“Where are you, sweetheart? When are you coming home?”My wife, Emily Whitaker, hesitated on the phone.“You’re back from your business trip? It’s my best friend’s birthday today. I’ll be home late tonight.”Since marrying Emily, she’d stayed home for years while we tried to start a family. To give my wife and our future children a better life, I traveled for

I stayed awake until dawn.It was nearly noon when Emily finally stumbled out of the bedroom, yawning and stretching.Whenever I returned from a business trip, I’d make it up to her by preparing a lavish breakfast, taking her out for meals and entertainment, and buying her anything she wanted. She didn’t deserve any of it.When she saw the empty dining table, she frowned.“Honey, you’re off today. Make some crispy roast chicken and meatloaf for me to take to Mom. She hasn’t had them in ages.”She said it as though it were the most natural thing in the world, expecting me to jump up and prepare everything like I always had, then ask afterward whether my mother-in-law enjoyed the food.No wonder she’d always looked strange whenever she talked about the meals. They weren’t going to my mother-in-law at all. They were ending up in her lover’s stomach. If I hadn’t seen her messages from that morning on the security footage, I might still be completely in the dark.I could almost pi

“Cancer is a bottomless pit. Instead of thinking about how to provide for your wife, you’re actually pressuring her like this. How could you?“If I were you, I’d take some sleeping pills and quietly end things without becoming a burden to anyone. Leave the house and whatever assets you have to your wife. That’s what a responsible man would do.”Ryan spoke with such conviction that Emily looked at him with undisguised admiration. Then she turned to me with nothing but contempt.“You’re both men. Just look at him, then look at you. How can the difference be so huge?”Easy for him to say when he wasn’t the one dying. If Ryan were really that selfless, why would he team up with Emily to transfer his stomach cancer to an innocent man like me?I sneered.“So you really like him that much?”Ryan frowned before Emily could answer.“I’m just Emily’s classmate. I happened to run into her mother and came along to check on her. Don’t make wild accusations just because you can’t keep your

“What?!”All three of them stared at me in shock.Emily glared at me. “Are you serious? Haven’t you always wanted a child?”Catherine chimed in. “I had someone look at the baby’s fortune. It’s a boy. If you make her get rid of him, you’ll regret it for the rest of your life.”Ryan froze for a moment before looking at me with contempt.“You’re so selfish that you’d sacrifice your own child just to save yourself?”Give me a break. Why should I die for someone else’s bastard? Before today, I would have been overjoyed to hear that Emily was pregnant. I might even have let them manipulate me into doing exactly what they wanted just to keep the baby. But I’d installed surveillance cameras throughout the house, and I’d seen everything Emily and the others had discussed on their phones before her mother arrived. That bitch Emily had secretly been taking birth control pills throughout our five-year marriage. She’d even secretly slipped pills into my food to reduce how often we slept t

I shrugged. “Who knows? Maybe you’ve done so many terrible things that karma finally caught up with you.”Emily immediately tried to slap me.But she wasn’t my wife anymore. I had no reason to keep putting up with her.I raised my hand and caught her wrist.“Pick someone else to throw a tantrum at. Do you really think I’ll keep tolerating you as I used to?”She flinched, clearly startled. Then she turned to Ryan with tears in her eyes.“Baby, please take me to the hospital. I’m scared.”Ryan looked lost in thought, as though his mind were somewhere else. It took Emily several calls before he finally snapped back to reality.“Don’t be scared, baby. I’ll take you to the hospital right now.”He helped Emily up and shoved past me, knocking his shoulder against mine.As our eyes met, he glared at me.“Watch your mouth. You’d better pray nothing’s wrong with Emily, or I’ll make you regret it.”I casually brushed the loose hair from my forehead.“Mr. Mitchell, you should worry a

I wasn’t sure whether Emily was simply too shaken to think straight or what. She seemed not to notice the loophole in Ryan’s words. He sounded reassuring, but he hadn’t actually made her any real promise.Yet somehow, Emily calmed down, though her body was still trembling.“You’re right. I can’t scare myself like this. I’m going to be fine.”While they waited for the results, Ryan checked his watch several times, looking increasingly anxious.Emily assumed he was worried about her and was so touched that tears welled up in her eyes.“Ryan, thank goodness you’re here with me. Divorcing Daniel was the best decision I ever made.”Even now, she couldn’t resist taking another jab at me.I couldn’t help wondering what would happen when the supposedly perfect Ryan turned around and abandoned her once she became seriously ill. After waiting a little longer, Ryan finally couldn’t take it anymore.“Baby, an important client has been waiting for me for half an hour. I need to go handle

I had to admit, Emily had actually figured out the truth. But there was no way I was going to admit it.“Emily, if you think something’s wrong with your head, go see a psychiatrist. Stop snapping at people like a rabid dog.”But Emily refused to let it go.“If you didn’t transfer your cancer to me, then how do you explain the fact that you had stage-two cancer but still looked healthy and full of energy?”Everyone around us stared at me with keen interest. They were all patients themselves. If they really believed cancer could be transferred, I wouldn’t be surprised if they kidnapped me or even cut me open to study me.A shiver ran down my spine.“The stomach is closely affected by stress and emotions. Once I got away from you and all the bad luck you brought into my life, I started eating and sleeping better. I was in a much better state of mind, and with proper treatment, naturally, my condition improved.“Medicine has come a long way. If cancer is caught and treated early, t

Emily and her mother grabbed my arms, refusing to let me leave.“You were able to transfer your cancer to me back then. That means you must have a way to transfer it to someone else, right?“I know I was wrong. I shouldn’t have betrayed you, and I shouldn’t have transferred the cancer to you. I’ve already paid the price for what I did.“But the baby is innocent. Please, you have to help me. When I said I’d transfer it back to you, I was just angry. I didn’t mean it. As long as you can get this cancer out of me, I don’t care who you transfer it to. I’ll be grateful to you for the rest of my life.”Emily looked at me with tears in her eyes. That expression used to work on me every time. But now, I felt absolutely nothing.I asked a passerby to call the police. Even after the officers arrived and took the mother and daughter away, Emily kept crying out desperately.“Daniel, I know I was wrong! Please help me!“If you can save me, I’ll end the pregnancy. I’ll stay with you, and we
