Chapter 4

Penulis: Moonlit Bough
“What?!”

All three of them stared at me in shock.

Emily glared at me. “Are you serious? Haven’t you always wanted a child?”

Catherine chimed in. “I had someone look at the baby’s fortune. It’s a boy. If you make her get rid of him, you’ll regret it for the rest of your life.”

Ryan froze for a moment before looking at me with contempt.

“You’re so selfish that you’d sacrifice your own child just to save yourself?”

Give me a break. Why should I die for someone else’s bastard?

Before today, I would have been overjoyed to hear that Emily was pregnant. I might even have let them manipulate me into doing exactly what they wanted just to keep the baby.

But I’d installed surveillance cameras throughout the house, and I’d seen everything Emily and the others had discussed on their phones before her mother arrived.

That bitch Emily had secretly been taking birth control pills throughout our five-year marriage.

She’d even secretly slipped pills into my food to reduce how often we slept together, which left me with almost no sex drive for a long time.

I actually worried that I wasn’t satisfying her. It made me insecure, so I treated her even better.

Even my parents treated her like royalty. Whenever she so much as frowned, the whole family would become tense and go out of their way to appease her.

Catherine knew exactly what she was doing. She quickly thought of bringing my parents in to pressure me.

My parents arrived in a panic, and Catherine immediately launched into a tirade, barely stopping to catch her breath.

Emily lifted her chin and sneered.

“If you want me to keep the baby, make Daniel give up his treatment and transfer all his assets to me.”

My mother was frantic.

“We’ll keep the baby, and we’ll pay for his treatment too. Emily, you just need to focus on taking care of yourself and the baby.”

Emily rolled her eyes.

“And how exactly are you going to pay for it? Sell your house? Sell your retail properties? Those all belong to my husband anyway.”

My parents exchanged a helpless look.

“Then we’ll borrow the money. We’re still capable of working. You don’t need to worry about the money. We’ll pay it back slowly.”

Emily still wasn’t satisfied.

“You’re both in your sixties. Where are you going to find the money? What if something happens to you? The debt will just end up on my shoulders.”

Catherine immediately backed her up.

“Then either they get divorced and Emily ends the pregnancy, with Daniel leaving the marriage with nothing. He can spend whatever he wants on his treatment, but ending the pregnancy will take a toll on my daughter, so you owe her two retail properties as compensation.

“If you don’t want a divorce, my daughter can give birth to the baby. But then Daniel has to give up treatment, and every property your family owns must be transferred to my daughter.

“I’d advise you to choose the second option. At least that way, you might still have something left. With the first option, you could end up losing both your money and your son.”

My father let out a long sigh, while my mother burst into tears.

“You’re tearing my heart out. If it were your daughter who had cancer today, would you still be this heartless?”

Catherine scoffed.

“My daughter was born blessed. How could she ever end up as unlucky as your son?”

My mother wiped away her tears and made up her mind.

“Then let’s get a divorce and end the pregnancy.

“No matter how precious my grandchild is, I won’t stand by and watch my son die. And don’t even think about those retail properties. You won’t get a single cent from us.”

Emily and the others looked as though they’d been slapped in the face.

The trump card they’d thought would force me into submission had failed to sway either me or my parents.

I grinned.

“Now it’s your turn to choose. Either we divorce, and the house and car stay with me while Emily gets the savings, or we stay married and I take out online loans to pay for my treatment. In that case, the debt will be ours to share.”

Emily was about to make another scene, so I immediately called an online lender.

Her face went white with fear.

She quickly grabbed my arm and dragged me toward the courthouse.

“Divorce! We’re getting divorced right now!”

After we left the courthouse, I used the strange charm and Emily’s birth details to transfer my cancer to her.

As my body grew stronger with each passing day, I finally allowed myself to relax.

Once the mandatory waiting period was over, Emily and I returned to the civil affairs office and finalized our divorce.

She didn’t even bother pretending anymore. She immediately hooked her arm through Ryan’s and threw a parting insult at me.

“You unlucky bastard. Let’s see how many days you have left. My wedding is next month. I wonder if you’ll even live long enough to attend.”

She covered her mouth and giggled. Ryan sneered as well.

“From now on, your wife and your savings belong to me. How does that make you feel?”

Why would I be angry?

I was practically celebrating.

Just yesterday, I’d gone back for a follow-up examination, and the cancer was completely gone.

Even the doctor called it a medical miracle.

Besides, I’d escaped a wife who was about to become nothing but a burden. I should be setting off fireworks to celebrate.

I grinned.

“Then congratulations in advance. I hope you two stay happily married for a hundred years. Just make sure your wedding doesn’t turn into a funeral.”

Emily’s brows shot up. She was about to curse me when she suddenly vomited a mouthful of blood.

Her eyes widened in disbelief.

“You’re the one who had cancer. So why am I coughing up blood?”

Emily and her mother grabbed my arms, refusing to let me leave.“You were able to transfer your cancer to me back then. That means you must have a way to transfer it to someone else, right?“I know I was wrong. I shouldn’t have betrayed you, and I shouldn’t have transferred the cancer to you. I’ve already paid the price for what I did.“But the baby is innocent. Please, you have to help me. When I said I’d transfer it back to you, I was just angry. I didn’t mean it. As long as you can get this cancer out of me, I don’t care who you transfer it to. I’ll be grateful to you for the rest of my life.”Emily looked at me with tears in her eyes. That expression used to work on me every time. But now, I felt absolutely nothing.I asked a passerby to call the police. Even after the officers arrived and took the mother and daughter away, Emily kept crying out desperately.“Daniel, I know I was wrong! Please help me!“If you can save me, I’ll end the pregnancy. I’ll stay with you, and we

I had to admit, Emily had actually figured out the truth. But there was no way I was going to admit it.“Emily, if you think something’s wrong with your head, go see a psychiatrist. Stop snapping at people like a rabid dog.”But Emily refused to let it go.“If you didn’t transfer your cancer to me, then how do you explain the fact that you had stage-two cancer but still looked healthy and full of energy?”Everyone around us stared at me with keen interest. They were all patients themselves. If they really believed cancer could be transferred, I wouldn’t be surprised if they kidnapped me or even cut me open to study me.A shiver ran down my spine.“The stomach is closely affected by stress and emotions. Once I got away from you and all the bad luck you brought into my life, I started eating and sleeping better. I was in a much better state of mind, and with proper treatment, naturally, my condition improved.“Medicine has come a long way. If cancer is caught and treated early, t

I wasn’t sure whether Emily was simply too shaken to think straight or what. She seemed not to notice the loophole in Ryan’s words. He sounded reassuring, but he hadn’t actually made her any real promise.Yet somehow, Emily calmed down, though her body was still trembling.“You’re right. I can’t scare myself like this. I’m going to be fine.”While they waited for the results, Ryan checked his watch several times, looking increasingly anxious.Emily assumed he was worried about her and was so touched that tears welled up in her eyes.“Ryan, thank goodness you’re here with me. Divorcing Daniel was the best decision I ever made.”Even now, she couldn’t resist taking another jab at me.I couldn’t help wondering what would happen when the supposedly perfect Ryan turned around and abandoned her once she became seriously ill. After waiting a little longer, Ryan finally couldn’t take it anymore.“Baby, an important client has been waiting for me for half an hour. I shrugged. “Who knows? Maybe you’ve done so many terrible things that karma finally caught up with you.”Emily immediately tried to slap me.But she wasn’t my wife anymore. I had no reason to keep putting up with her.I raised my hand and caught her wrist.“Pick someone else to throw a tantrum at. Do you really think I’ll keep tolerating you as I used to?”She flinched, clearly startled. Then she turned to Ryan with tears in her eyes.“Baby, please take me to the hospital. I’m scared.”Ryan looked lost in thought, as though his mind were somewhere else. It took Emily several calls before he finally snapped back to reality.“Don’t be scared, baby. I’ll take you to the hospital right now.”He helped Emily up and shoved past me, knocking his shoulder against mine.As our eyes met, he glared at me.“Watch your mouth. You’d better pray nothing’s wrong with Emily, or I’ll make you regret it.”I casually brushed the loose hair from my forehead.“Mr. Mitchell, you should worry a

“Cancer is a bottomless pit. Instead of thinking about how to provide for your wife, you’re actually pressuring her like this. How could you?“If I were you, I’d take some sleeping pills and quietly end things without becoming a burden to anyone. Leave the house and whatever assets you have to your wife. That’s what a responsible man would do.”Ryan spoke with such conviction that Emily looked at him with undisguised admiration. Then she turned to me with nothing but contempt.“You’re both men. Just look at him, then look at you. How can the difference be so huge?”Easy for him to say when he wasn’t the one dying. If Ryan were really that selfless, why would he team up with Emily to transfer his stomach cancer to an innocent man like me?I sneered.“So you really like him that much?”Ryan frowned before Emily could answer.“I’m just Emily’s classmate. I happened to run into her mother and came along to check on her. Don’t make wild accusations just because you can’t keep your
