Chapter 1

That was when it hit me.My feelings had always been their private joke.Damien saw me go quiet and came over."Mia, don't make a scene. If I didn't like you, would I have kept those letters all these years?"He sounded so smug.Like humiliating me was some kind of favor.I pulled the hundredth letter from my bag.The second Damien saw the envelope, he reached for it like it already belonged to him."Finally gonna give it to me?"I looked at him and smiled. Then I ripped the letter in half."You don't need to read it. There won't be another one."The scraps fluttered onto Damien's black slacks. He stared down at them for a beat, then lifted a brow."Mia, what are you doing?"The private room went dead quiet. Then someone snorted."Wait, is she actually pissed?""Damien, better calm her down. Your little fangirl's losing it."Damien didn't laugh. He bent down, picked up half the letter, and narrowed his eyes."I asked you a question."That edge in his voice used to

Chapter 2

Rain started falling as I stepped out of the club in Riverton. My phone wouldn't stop buzzing.Someone had dropped a video in the class group chat. They'd edited the clip of me ripping up letter number one hundred with fake sobbing sounds and a caption:[Damien, go get her. Your biggest fan just rage-quit.]Then came a flood of laughing emojis.I stared at the screen for a few seconds, then left the group chat.I'd barely shoved my phone back into my bag when a black Cullinan rolled up to the curb. The rear window slid down.Damien frowned when he saw me standing in the rain. "Get in."He'd done this before.Senior year, when people cornered me in the stairwell and made fun of me, he'd stood outside the crowd and said, "Move."Back then, I thought it meant I was special to him.Now I knew better. He'd just gotten used to owning my pathetic devotion.Caleb Twain, the chauffeur, got out with an umbrella and opened the door."Ms. Martinez, Mr. Byford wants you in the car."

Chapter 3

Back at my apartment, I grabbed my ID documents, shoved them deep into my bag, and booked an express train ticket. After tomorrow night's performance, I was gone for good.***At exactly seven, the alumni gala auditorium was blazing with lights. The second I stepped out of the car, cold air swept through the side entrance, making my fingers stiff.Damien stood by the door on his phone. The second he saw me, he hung up and studied my face."Why are you so pale?"He pulled a piece of candy from his suit pocket and held it out. "Eat this first."The wrapper was lemon yellow. My old favorite.Damien always said they were way too sour, but he still kept a box in his car.I looked at the candy.Like my silence was nothing new, he tugged my shawl higher."Cover up. It's freezing backstage."The gesture was so familiar. For a second, I almost forgot this was the same hand that had threatened me with that video last night. Then Shannon called from nearby."Damien, I think my e

Chapter 4

The dressing-room door slammed behind us.Shannon followed, eyes red, voice shaky. "Damien, I swear I didn't know those letters would show up. I don't know why Mia would do this to me..."Damien let go of me and turned to steady her.His face stayed calm. His eyes didn't.Once Shannon settled down, he looked at me."Apologize."I stared at him. "What?"Damien's face hardened."Shannon was the star tonight. You pulled that stunt during her performance and humiliated her in front of everyone."You owe her an apology."My chest tightened so hard I could barely breathe."Those letters were mine. I wrote them to you. And you kept them around so everyone could laugh at me."Damien frowned."I kept them because I couldn't be bothered to throw them out."They turned it into a joke because they didn't know when to stop."But you stopped playing and left Shannon stranded onstage. That part was on you."He said it like it was obvious.Like my pain, my humiliation, and ten years

Chapter 5

Third-Person POVIt took Damien half an hour to realize something was off.Shannon leaned against the couch, pale. "Damien, did I scare you?"He looked down at her.Usually, he would've called a doctor right away and asked what was wrong. But Mia's last words wouldn't leave his head. 'I hope you two stay this perfect for each other forever.'She hadn't sounded bitter. She'd sounded done.Damien suddenly pulled his sleeve from Shannon's grip. She froze. "Damien?"Without a word, Damien turned and walked out.The hallway was empty.Staff were packing up equipment. The second they saw him, they straightened.Damien's face darkened."Where's Mia?"One of them hesitated."Ms. Martinez just left.""Where'd she go?""I'm not sure. She had a small suitcase and looked like she was in a rush."'A small suitcase.'The words hit hard.Damien pulled out his phone and called Mia.Straight to voicemail. His expression turned cold.He immediately called her apartment building.

Chapter 6

Mia's POVIt was almost dawn when I reached Southport. The station exit was nearly empty.I dragged my suitcase outside, cold wind burning my eyes. The second I turned my phone back on, missed calls flooded the screen. Then a text popped up.[Mia, answer your phone.]Two minutes later:[Where are you?]Eventually, his messages stopped sounding like orders.[Stop this. I'll come get you.]I stared at the message for a long time. Then I blocked his number. The cab driver asked where I was headed.I gave him the address.A recovery center in Southport. My brother, Ethan Martinez, had been there for the past two years. After our family fell apart, he'd protected me from a lot.And hidden just as much.By the time the cab pulled up, dawn was breaking. The second I stepped out, I saw someone waiting by the entrance.Ethan stood there in a dark coat. He'd lost a lot of weight, but he still stood straight. The second he saw me, he didn't ask a thing. He just opened his

Chapter 7

Damien found me in Southport a week later.I'd just left the recovery center with Ethan's medication when I spotted him across the street. He looked wrecked.Bloodshot eyes. Stubble on his jaw. Perfect suit, exhausted face. The second he saw me, his whole expression changed."Mia."I stopped cold.He hurried over and reached for the bag in my hand.I pulled it back. His hand froze.A second later, he acted like nothing happened."I'm here to take you home."I looked at him. "Home where?"He frowned. "Riverton."I renewed your apartment lease. I handled the auditorium video too. No one's going to spread it."He rattled it all off like fixing those things should've been enough."I made Shannon leave Riverton."I'll make her apologize for the note-box stunt."Then he added, "You can punish her however you want."I listened, then asked, "What about you?"Damien froze."She mocked my letters. She was wrong."They laughed at me. They were wrong."What about you?"His

Chapter 8

Damien didn't leave. He rented a place near the recovery center.Every morning at seven, breakfast showed up at the door.An onion-free omelet. Hot chocolate. Lemon candy. Then came an out-of-print piano score I'd once mentioned wanting.I never accepted any of it.After days of watching the gifts pile up, Ethan finally had the staff send everything back.Damien didn't make a scene. He just stood under a tree across from the recovery center every day.Even in the rain, he didn't use an umbrella. One day, I looked out the window. His suit was soaked through. He looked like he had that night outside the club, when he'd tilted the umbrella toward me.But this time, I didn't go downstairs.Ethan stood behind me."Feel bad for him?"I shook my head."I just think he finally knows what it feels like to be cold."Ethan stayed quiet. After a while, he said, "Don't let his pain become yours."I closed the curtains."I won't."Two weeks later, Damien finally cracked. The r

Chapter 9

Damien didn't show up the day I left Southport.According to my assistant, Celine Tully, he'd gone back to Riverton.Something had happened with the Byford family. After losing her contract, Shannon posted the alumni gala video and the full story behind the note-box stunt online. She tried to shift the blame, saying Damien had let it all happen. But online, nobody cared who was technically at fault. All anyone saw was a whole group ganging up on one person.Damien got dragged online.Byford Corp's stock dropped three days straight, and business partners started backing out.His father ended up in the hospital from the stress.Everyone said Damien Byford had never fallen this hard. When I heard, I was already at the airport.Ethan looked at me. "Don't you want one last look?"I shook my head."No."Before boarding, I got an email from Damien. No long message.Just a photo. The box of notes had been burned to ash.Under it was one line.[Mia, I'm sorry.]I stared at

Chapter 10

A year later, I held my first solo recital abroad. My final piece was called Echoes of Yesterday.Every seat was filled. When the lights dimmed, Damien never crossed my mind.I only thought about myself. The girl who'd secretly written ninety-nine letters. How foolish she'd been. How sincere. How hard she'd loved. And how she'd finally walked away from all that pain. When I finished, the applause wouldn't stop.I stood to bow. Then I saw someone familiar in the back row.Damien.He'd lost a lot of weight. He sat in a dark corner, holding a bouquet of tiny lemon-yellow flowers.I glanced at him once, then looked away. After everyone left, he waited outside backstage. No orders this time.No asking me to come back.He just held out the flowers, his voice painfully rough."Mia, I didn't come to bother you. I just wanted to hear you finish that piece."I nodded."You heard it. Now go."Damien's eyes turned red."Are you doing well?""Very."He smiled, but tears s
