Chapter 1

This was the seventh day of my cold war with Ethan, also the last Valentine’s Day of our four years in college. He had given me an invitation to attend his new company’s yacht party.I set off clutching a wristwatch bought with two full months of my part-time earnings—a gift I hadn't managed to give him on his birthday, which I now intended to use to break the ice and reconcile.Yet the moment I stepped onto the deck, I saw him holding Vivian, his childhood sweetheart, in his arms, shielding her from champagne being sprayed by another colleague.Later, they played Truth or Dare and Vivian had to find someone on the spot to sip a drink with.Pouting, she picked up a cocktail and walked right up to Ethan. “Hey handsome, wanna share my drink?”Ethan raised an eyebrow, a playful smirk curving on his lips.Emboldened, Vivian held the cup to his lips, put hers on the other side of it, and started sipping.Their mouths were inches apart while their noses almost touched.I stood rooted to the

It was Ethan who had forbidden me from accepting offers from top firms, insisting that a girl didn’t need to push herself so hard, promising he could provide for me.Riding on his uncle’s influence, he had landed the title General Manager of a regional branch right after graduation. He told me he’d arrange a spot for me soon after, claiming he couldn’t bear the thought of us working in different places and not being able to see me.The cruel irony was that long before I could even set foot in his company, Vivian had already claimed her spot.Vivian slid her arm through Ethan’s, leaning her entire body against his.“A toast, Mr. Hayes! As your executive assistant, I’ll be under your care from now.“Though you really should treat Chloe a little better too. It’s rare for college sweethearts to stay together after graduation. In popular romance novels, when the female lead can’t find a job, her CEO boyfriend would hire her as his personal secretary.“Kisses, hugs, doting affection every da

When Ethan returned, I confronted him about the bracelet.Only then did he even remember the incident, and yet his face showed not a speck of remorse.“It’s just a cheap braided string, isn’t it? Vivian said it looked cute, so I gave it to her.“Are you seriously throwing a fit with me over something this trivial?“She even asked me where you got it, saying she wanted to buy you back one to apologize.“Now everyone at the office is spreading rumors about her and me. Is that your doing? Did you run your mouth?“Listen, if you keep making scenes out of nothing, we’re through!”I couldn’t find the energy to offer a single word of rebuttal. And so, the cold war began. In an attempt to punish me for not backing down, he invited me to this team-building trip, only to fling those hurting words in my face in front of everyone. On the yacht, the party grew increasingly boisterous.A colleague wandered over holding a glass of wine, teasingly chiming in:“Look how protective of Vivian you are. Ar

I summoned every ounce of strength in my body to suppress the raging fury within me, fixing Ethan with a death stare to see how he’d react. He was far too smart not to pick up on Vivian’s malice. And yet he merely gave a nonchalant shrug:“So what?“If my uncle actually takes a liking to her, it’ll be her golden ticket into high society.“Don’t worry, I won’t cling to you if such a thing happens. After all, if you succeed, you might end up as my respected aunt.”The moment he finished, an explosion of laughter erupted around us.It was as though they had already decided I’d be ruthlessly rejected and turned into the laughingstock of town.Mortified, I wished the deck would swallow me whole, even as the rage burning inside my chest reached its boiling point.Just as I was about to blow up, lines of live comments materialized out of thin air before my eyes:“This scum’s having another episode. He cares so damn much it’s killing him, but he just has to put on this fake cool act!”“Chloe,

I refused to be a second version of my mother. And so, my mind was made up. Clenching my fists, I looked up under the watchful eyes of the crowd and spoke in a clear, resonant voice:“Fine, I’ll give it a try!“If he returns my affection, you’ll have to call me your aunt soon.”The grin on Ethan’s face froze at once, a terrifying storm brewing beneath his eyes.Over on the live comment stream, the chat was already throwing a party:*Yeah, serves him right! Keep playing it cool, keep acting all high and mighty—look who’s dead in his tracks now!”“You go girl! Seeing the scum’s face fall cleared my skin and all my debts!”“I’ve thought his uncle was the real deal all along. Rich, gorgeous, and madly in love with our girl!”“He knew Chloe had a boyfriend and never crossed the line once. He watched over her from afar, waiting for her to turn around and meet his gaze!”“Uhm, actually... Our Prince Charming is not a man of no action. On plenty of late, quiet nights, he’d stare at her photo a

This time, I was far more composed.I had made up my mind: if he rejected me, I would jump straight into the ocean. Anything was better than looking at Ethan’s revolting face ever again.Sebastian blinked in subtle surprise, his lips curving into an enigmatic smile.“I can do that.“However, don’t you currently have a boyfriend?“You must cut all ties with him. Otherwise, I won’t consider it.“Of course, I can give you an entire evening to settle things. Can you manage that?”As he spoke, his gaze carried a faint, barely perceptible trace of cautious hesitation.Could... could it be those live comments had told the truth?Had this man been carrying a secret crush on me all this time?Seeing me remain silent, Sebastian assumed I was having second thoughts.Terrified I might back out, he instantly pivoted:“Scratch that—two days. No, three days is fine too! Or rather, just tell me: how much time do you need?“To celebrate the occasion, I’ll treat everyone to dinner. By the way, what cuis

He sounded like he was granting me the greatest mercy one could imagine.I was quick to dodge his hand, stating word for word, “No. I have zero interest in getting back with you.”Ethan stood frozen in place, gritting his teeth into a sneer.“You’re serious?“You really think just because my uncle agreed to go out with you, you’re turning into Cinderella now?“Fine, we’re done then!”Over these past few years, Ethan had constantly threaten to be done with me, treating the threat as his weapon to keep me in line.Every single time, I had been scared out of my mind, terrified that if I lost him, I would be left with nothing. So whenever he threatened to end things, I would immediately cast aside every last shred of my dignity to apologize and beg for peace. But this time, it suddenly hit me: compromise could never earn me his affection, only my humiliation.Everyone has their limit, and when pushed to such limit, fighting back is the only choice. What he did with Vivian was the final str

“Didn’t you like the food at dinner? I noticed you barely touched your plate.“I had the kitchen pack a few of your favorite small bites.“Come downstairs and grab them.”I bolted off the sofa, slapping on my slippers to dash downstairs.Parked under the massive camphor tree outside the building was a sleek Bentley.Sebastian leaned against the driver’s side door, phone pressed to his ear with one hand and a high-end paper gift bag dangling from the other. He glanced up at me, a tender smile lingering on his lips.“Gimme a second—on my way!”Hanging up, I sprinted down the remaining steps and took the bag from his hand.Upstairs, Sebastian unpacked the containers one by one on the coffee table.I recognized the logo stamped on the boxes—it was an exclusive, high-end private kitchen I adored, though one I rarely frequented due to the exorbitant prices.Every dish was one of their signature items I had been craving for months. We shared the late-night meal together, then curled up on the

Gemma tugged nervously at my sleeve, dropping her voice to a low whisper: “Chloe...”I offered her a reassuring look before calmly lifting my head to meet the eyes of the man raging in the doorway.Across my vision, the live comment stream burst into a frenzied swirl:“Oh look, the scumbag delivered himself right to the door! Check out that sour face—you’d think Chloe owed him millions!”“What’s he here for? Begging to get back together? Or spouting more threats?”“What’s the guy thinking? Apex Capital is no place for his petty drama!”“Don’t back down, Chloe! Put him in his place! Show the jerk his days pushing you around are over!”Taking a deep breath, I leaned back against my chair with no intention of standing up, keeping my tone distant and formal.“Mr. Hayes, it’s working hours, and I have a heavy stack of files to finish. Besides, I don’t believe there’s anything left for us to discuss.”The way I addressed him drew a sharp line between us at once.Ethan’s expression darkened f

He broadened my vision and perspective immensely, and I was no longer that timid, hesitant girl who would spend her entire day agonizing over a single word from Ethan. With the money I earned, I invested in my best friend’s newly opened design studio, which turned a massive profit in its very first quarter.Soon came the annual Ashford Distinction Gala, which brought together top elites across all corners of the financial industry. As our firm’s Employee of the Year, I took the stage in an elegant gown to deliver my address.Once my speech concluded, I carried a flute of champagne to a quiet corner, ready to catch my breath, when I overheard a few colleagues whispering nearby.“You guys heard? Looks like Ethan is dating that girl Vivian now.”“I saw them hand in hand shopping the other day, and at the movies together—acting like total lovebirds.”“Oh, yeah. Last time it rained and the company entrance flooded, he even carried her across on his back! Looks like wedding bells are around
