I opened a flower shop in the outskirts of New York. The shop was small, but business was good. The neighbors loved coming by to buy my flowers.Lilith came to visit me once, and as she was leaving, she held my hand and said, “Monica, you look so much more at ease than you used to.”I smiled but said nothing. It was true. I hadn’t woken up in a panic in the middle of the night for a long time. I hadn’t dreamed about Edward in a long time, either. That afternoon, I was changing the water for a bouquet of white lilies when the bell above the door rang. Without looking up, I said, “Welcome. What would you like to buy?”There were no footsteps. No one said a word.Confused, I looked up and froze.Edward was standing in the doorway. He had lost a great deal of weight. His cheekbones jutted sharply from his gaunt face, his eye sockets were sunken, and he was wearing a gray overcoat with a wrinkled collar. He was clutching something in his hand so tightly that his knuckles had gone white.“Mo
