Serena:By the time my last class ended, I had already decided I wasn’t going. The only problem that I had was how to refuse an Alpha without giving half the estate something new to whisper about. Saying no to Alexander Petrova in private might have been manageable. Saying no after he had announced, in the middle of the concubine hall, that he would be waiting for me tonight, well, that was a different kind of danger.I walked back toward my room with the notebook tucked beneath my arm, my thoughts moving faster than my feet.Cassandra’s face kept intruding on every memory of the previous evening: the way she had smiled as if the house belonged to her, the casual confidence in the way she said his name, the way she had stood in the hall and reminded everyone that she had been here first. My chest tightened until it hurt, and I hated that it hurt.I had spent days telling myself Alexander was nothing to me: an Alpha who bought women because he wanted children, a man who had discovered m

Serena:I sat on the couch in front of the fireplace with enough space between Alexander and me that there was no mistaking it for distance by accident. The gap was deliberate, a small, stubborn island of air I could retreat to if the conversation turned the way I feared it might. For once, he didn’t fill the silence with a teasing remark or an attempt to close the space simply to rile me. He stayed where he was, one arm draped along the back of the couch, his attention on the flames as if the kiss from minutes ago had been nothing more than a misplaced memory. That calm irritated me more than any taunt would have.My lips still tingled. And the fact that I kissed him back made me angrier than I should have been. Because the second his mouth touched mine, my wolf had surged forward and whatever anger I’d been holding onto had shifted into something hotter, more dangerous.“Do you want wine?” Alexander asked, breaking the moment of silence.“Yes, please.” I said, and he nodded before ge

Serena:I stared at him until the question lodged in my chest stopped echoing. How would that make you feel?He stood close enough that I could still feel the heat of him, and the question felt more dangerous than any order he’d ever given. He hadn’t asked whether I would obey. He hadn’t reminded me of why I’d been brought here. He’d asked how I would feel, and I hated that I didn’t have an answer ready.“I don’t know,” I whispered. “I mean, I know that it is my duty to give you a child, but if you are the one to ask me to do it… I don’t know how I am going to feel about it or how I am going to be reacting to it.”“That is honest,” he said. “Thank you for it.”“I wasn’t going to lie to you about something that I know needs me to be honest.” I said, and he nodded in understanding, clearly agreeing to my statement.I should have left then, I moved toward the door, certain the safest thing was to walk away from whatever this was before it could become something I couldn’t control. He ste

Helena:Serena sat across from me with the same expression she wore whenever she suspected someone was about to waste her time: guarded, impatient, and stubbornly proud.I had to admit, I wanted to smile. Instead I folded my hands and let her simmer a moment, watching as she bounced her leg being as impatient as I expected her to be.“So,” I said, “you want to satisfy the Alpha.”Her face shifted the way it always did when I pushed a button. “Please don’t make me regret thinking about asking you.”“I haven’t even started,” I replied. “And it is going to be a little lesson. I am glad that you chose to want learn, but you are going to have to be willing to accept listening.”She uncrossed her arms slowly. The classroom was empty now; the other women had left and the late afternoon light warmed the polished floor. This was private. This was important. She needed to listen, not perform.“You asked what you could do differently,” I reminded her. “You wanted to stand out when it came to the

Serena:By the time Helena stepped into the classroom, I was already tired of hearing people talk about Alexander. Not because I wasn’t thinking about him myself. Well, mostly I did but I wasn’t going to say that out loud. Because his words from last night kept playing in my mind throughout most of the day, and Helena’s lesson played through the other half of the day.I sat by the window, pretending to pay attention while the instructor explained formal dinner protocol. The notebook Alexander had given me lay open, but instead of notes I’d been doodling in the corner for the last five minutes. Josephene noticed, of course.“You know you’re supposed to be writing what she says,” she whispered. “You are in class to learn and not play with some doodles that you think are going to get you anywhere. Well, then again, you don’t belong here, but you should at least pretend to try.”I didn’t look at her.“You know you’re supposed to mind your business.” I said, giving her a cold smile as I ke
