Nobody moved. The little girl stood at the river's edge, her bare feet resting on the grass. She looked six years old, perhaps a little younger. Her dark hair fell unevenly around her face, as if someone had cut it with kitchen scissors. A small scar crossed her cheek, and her gray eyes were fixed on Rei with an expression that was far too old for her face. She wasn't angry. That was what made it unbearable. She looked disappointed. As though she had spent a very long time preparing herself for this meeting and had somehow still hoped it would go differently.Rei swallowed.“What do you mean, I got to live?”The little girl lowered her eyes.“I mean you got to have a name.”Rei's chest tightened.“You have a name.”“No, I don't.”The girl glanced at the river.“I had one. Before they erased me. But when they took me out of the first choice, they took that, too.”“Who erased you?” Dominic asked. The child looked at him.For a moment, something like recognition passed through her face.
