Julian's POVTwenty-six years. That was how long it had been since his mother had walked through this door.Twenty-six years since she had walked out of his life completely, leaving behind a twelve-year-old boy and a father who had never once said the word love out loud.Julian stared at her now.For a moment, he couldn't believe she was actually standing in front of him.His mother.Margaret Blackwood. The woman he had spent most of his life trying not to think about. The woman who had disappeared from his life when he was only twelve."What are you doing here?"Julian kept his voice flat.He refused to let her hear the shock in it.He refused to let her see how fast his heart was beating. He had spent twenty-six years learning how to hide his feelings. He wasn't about to forget how now.Margaret stepped farther into the study."I heard about the fire."Her eyes moved briefly toward Zoe before returning to Julian."The board meeting. The rumors."Julian gave a short, humorless laugh.

Zoe's POVArthur arrived within the hour.He looked like someone who had been pulled out of bed without warning. His hair was messy, his shirt was slightly wrinkled, and he still looked tired. But the moment Margaret finished telling him what she knew, the tiredness disappeared from his face. His eyes became sharp."What exactly did she tell you?" he asked.Julian quickly explained everything.Marcus.Vantage Holdings. The money. His father's death. The missing autopsy. And the possibility that Marcus had been working against Blackwood Industries for much longer than any of them had realized.Arthur listened without interrupting. When Julian finished, Arthur slowly nodded."If Marcus is planning something at the gala, we need to prepare for it."He placed a large floor plan on Julian's desk.It showed the event space at the Met, including the main entrance, staff entrances, private areas, parking access, and the locations of the tables.Arthur pointed at the different sections."We ne

Julian's POVThe warehouse stood at the edge of the East River, dark and almost falling apart. It looked like the kind of place no one visited unless they had a very good reason.Parts of the old building had already collapsed. Broken windows covered the walls, and weeds had grown through cracks in the pavement. A single light could be seen through one of the broken windows.Julian stared at it from across the dark street. That was where Marcus had chosen to meet Zoe.That was where Elena was being held. And Julian hated every part of the plan."You understand the risk."Detective Ramirez's quiet voice pulled Julian's attention away from the warehouse. The detective was crouched beside him in the shadow of a large shipping container. He wore plain dark clothes instead of a police uniform.Other officers were spread around the area. Some were across the street.Others were closer to the warehouse. They were trying to stay hidden.Julian nodded."I understand."His jaw was tight. His wh

Zoe's POVZoe turned slowly. Her heart was beating so hard that she could hear it in her ears. For a moment, she couldn't understand what she was seeing.A woman was stepping out of the shadows near the back entrance of the warehouse. She was tall, with silver hair that made her look older than she really was.Zoe guessed she was around fifty. But there was something unusual about the way she moved. Her clothes were simple.Nothing about her appearance suggested that she wanted attention.Yet the way she carried herself was careful.Watchful.Like someone who was always aware of what was happening around her.Zoe stared at her."Who are you?"The woman stopped. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then the woman looked directly at Zoe.Something about her face made Zoe's chest tighten. The shape of her eyes. The way she looked at her. There was something strangely familiar about it.Zoe didn't understand why.She had never seen this woman before. At least, she didn't think she had."M

Zoe's POVThe hospital waiting room smelled of antiseptic and coffee. Zoe sat curled up in a chair with a blanket around her shoulders, staring at the door to Renata Cole's room. She had been staring at that door for almost an hour.Every few minutes, she looked at it again, as if the door might suddenly disappear and take the truth with it.Her mother was on the other side. Her mother.Even thinking the words felt strange.Twenty years ago, Zoe had believed her mother was gone. She had grown up moving from one foster home to another, learning early that promises did not always mean anything. She had learned how to take care of herself because there had been nobody else to depend on.Now, everything she thought she knew about her past had changed."She's stable."The doctor's words from an hour earlier still played in her mind."The bullet only grazed her shoulder. It's painful, but it isn't life-threatening. She'll need to stay overnight so we can watch her."Zoe had nodded when she
