The hours until the evening lesson stretched thin and tight.I remained in the sitting space of the inner chambers with the residual burn of the morning’s calls still present in my arms and the Burden moving under my skin in constant, low waves. Every distant sound of boots in the reinforced corridors sent another ripple through the current. I practiced the awareness until the effort itself became another form of fatigue. Notice it. Do not call it. Do not push it away. Let it settle. The current settled only partially. Fear of the rising numbers outside the walls kept it close to the surface and ready. When the outer bolts finally turned, Elder Orion entered first, staff tapping lightly against the stone. Kael followed and closed the door himself. The small chamber felt immediately smaller under the combined weight of their presence. Golden eyes found me at once and assessed the tension I had not been able to hide.“The eastern count is confirmed above thirty,” Kael said. His voice ca

The sealed chamber became a place of pure listening.I stood in the center of the sitting space with both arms wrapped tightly around my middle and strained for every sound that reached through the reinforced doors. The full defensive posture of the inner keep had a different voice from ordinary night watches. Boots moved in rapid, purposeful patterns. Short commands cut through the corridors. Somewhere farther out, beyond the thick stone, the pressure tests on the two approaches continued. I could not hear the fighting itself, only the consequences that traveled inward in the form of urgent footsteps and the occasional raised voice. The Burden refused to settle. Every new surge of noise from beyond the doors sent the current climbing. I held it down with constant, deliberate effort. Notice the warmth. Do not call it. Do not push it away. Let it settle. The exercise had become a continuous act rather than a practice. The residual burn from the evening lesson layered under a fresher, s

I did not truly sleep. The short stretch of darkness that remained before first light passed in fragments of restless stillness. I lay on the bed with both arms extended at my sides because any other position made the residual burn worse, and I listened to the keep continue its full-alert rhythm beyond the reinforced doors. The Burden moved under my skin in low, exhausted waves, still too close to the surface, still sensitive to every distant order and every shift of boots in the corridors. I held the awareness in place without attempting deeper work. There was nothing left to give the exercises until the lesson forced it.When the outer bolts turned at the first pale edge of light, I was already sitting on the edge of the bed. Elder Orion entered first, staff in hand, clouded eyes assessing the visible strain I had not been able to erase. Kael followed and closed the door himself. Dirt still marked the edges of his sleeves from the night’s fighting. The shallow cut on his forearm had

The sealed chamber became a place of pure survival.I remained on the bench with both hands locked around its edge and fought the Burden for every breath that followed the slamming of the bolts. The current no longer rose in separate surges. It pushed in a continuous, climbing pressure that demanded constant, exhausting resistance. Notice the warmth. Do not call it. Do not push it away. Let it settle. The old instructions had narrowed to a single act of will repeated against a power that had grown too closely tied to the violence outside the doors.Sounds reached me in broken, urgent fragments. Boots hammered through the reinforced corridors in numbers that spoke of full commitment. Short, sharp commands cut through the stone. Somewhere beyond the thick walls a horn sounded once, low and carrying, the same breach-ready signal that had marked the earlier near-collapse of the eastern line. The knowledge that both secondary markers were now under simultaneous assault sent another violent

The current pushed in a continuous, rising pressure that no longer eased between surges. Notice the warmth. Do not call it. Do not push it away. Let it settle. The instructions had reduced to a single act of will held against a power that had grown too tightly bound to the violence outside the doors.Sounds reached me in broken, urgent pieces. Boots hammered through the reinforced corridors in heavy, repeated patterns. Short commands cut through the stone with the raw edge of men holding a line under real pressure. Somewhere beyond the thick walls, a horn sounded once, low and carrying, the breach-ready signal that had marked every near-collapse of the secondary markers. The knowledge that both approaches were again under simultaneous staged advance sent another violent climb through the cur
