Chapter 1

Peyton Shaw froze when he saw me.He hurriedly pushed the plate of spaghetti toward me."You're back. I made you some spaghetti."He wore an apron over his bare chest. He was over six feet tall, with striking features, broad shoulders, and a narrow waist.I swallowed and couldn't help looking at him a little longer. Then I saw his clean skin, and my nose stung with tears.I suddenly thought of Gavin Zane. His chest, back, and thighs were covered in clusters of red rashes. He never let me turn off the lights. He said I had to look at his body and remember who my man was. When I asked for a divorce, he grabbed me by the throat and slammed me against the wall."If you tell anyone, I'll make sure everyone you care about suffers!"Peyton noticed my red eyes and quickly lifted the spaghetti with his fork.He brought the two eggs hidden underneath to the top. "I made you two eggs today."I glanced at his plate. He didn't have any eggs.I sat down, twirled some spaghetti around my fork, and to

I only stopped taking the pills after my in-laws threatened the orphanage director who raised me.I wondered whether Sasha would still get her two million dollars once they learned the truth. Then I remembered the rumors about the magic lamp and sent a tentative reply.[Is there really no way for us to switch back?]Sasha replied almost immediately.[Switch back? Shayla, are you dreaming?][Let me explain. The lamp granted three wishes. My first was to swap souls with you.][My second was that they would never discover you're the real Shayla Moore.][For my third, I wished for twins—a boy and a girl.][The lamp is broken now, so give it up! That shabby little rental is where you belong.]I let out a long breath, and a smile slowly spread across my face. Now I could finally stop worrying.I walked into Sasha's room and found a closet full of designer handbags. Some were secondhand, but I could tell from the quality of the leather that every one was genuine.I glanced back at Peyton, who

"Sasha… do you want a divorce?""What?""You sold all the bags and jewelry I gave you. Do you not want me anymore?"His voice trembled a little. He was over six feet tall, yet somehow he looked like a big golden retriever whose owner was about to abandon him.A wave of affection washed over me, and I couldn't resist ruffling his hair."Of course not, honey. I just realized I don't like those things anymore. These days, I like cash more than designer bags!"He still looked doubtful.I quickly pulled the necklace from my pocket and held it out in my palm."I kept this."He looked down at the necklace without a word.I held it a little closer."Peyton, I was irresponsible. I spent too much, but I won't do that anymore. Once the money comes through, we'll cover the six thousand you still owe."He looked up, his eyes a little red."Sasha, a husband should spend money on his wife. That doesn't make you irresponsible…"His words touched something deep inside me.No one in my entire life ever

The Shaws were unquestionably the wealthiest family in the capital, with businesses spanning every industry. But everyone knew their younger son went missing twenty years ago and was never found.Peter gave Gavin's father a perfunctory handshake, his tone cool."We don't know yet. We're still waiting for the test results."Sasha only had to see Gavin's father fawning over them to understand. She might not know who they were, but they were clearly people of considerable standing. Her expression shifted, and she instinctively glanced at me.I watched her with a faint smile and said nothing. That smile seemed to sting her, and she couldn't hold her tongue."Mr. Shaw, surely there's been a mistake? How could Peyton possibly be your missing son?""Don't let him fool you. These country kids are always lying and scamming people!"Gavin's father slapped her before she could say another word. "Shut up!"Sasha clutched her cheek in disbelief. "Dad, you hit me?"Elaine gave a soft laugh, but ther

"No… This can't be happening… How…"She grabbed the nurse's arm, her voice shaking."How could I possibly have HIV? There must be a mistake! I get a checkup every year, and they've never found anything wrong!"The nurse winced at her grip and pulled her arm away, her tone cool."The report is quite clear, Miss Moore. You have been diagnosed with HIV. We also have your previous records. Your last test was already positive.""What did you say?"Sasha's voice turned shrill. She rounded on me. "Shayla! Why didn't you tell me you had HIV?"I put on an innocent expression."What are you talking about, Mrs. Zane? You're Shayla Moore! How is your illness somehow my fault?"Sasha's face flushed, then drained of color. She instinctively stepped toward me, but Peyton quietly moved in front of me, blocking her path. She looked at Peyton, then at Gavin's furious parents behind her, and completely panicked."No, that's not what happened…"She pointed at me as she spoke."It's her! She's the real Sha

Gavin grabbed her by the collar. "If anything happens to my mother, you'll pay for it!"He threw Sasha to the floor, and a dark red stain slowly spread beneath her. Before taking her into surgery, the nurse asked her to arrange payment. She pulled out the card with two million dollars in it.The nurse hurried to the billing desk, then came back."I'm sorry, Miss Moore, but this card has been frozen. Do you have another way to pay?"Sasha's expression froze.Just as I linked my arm through Peyton's and prepared to leave, she lunged forward and clung to his legs."Peyton… I'm Sasha… I'm really Sasha Lane…"But Peyton quickly kicked her away as though she were something filthy. She collapsed on the floor, blood pooling beneath her.I turned, met her venomous stare, and gave her a mocking smile. On the day the Shaws held a banquet to welcome Peyton home, Elaine slipped an emerald bracelet onto my wrist. Her hand was warm as she held mine."Sasha, this bracelet has been in our family for ge

Sasha scanned the room, then suddenly smiled when her gaze landed on me.That smile sent a chill through me."Shayla, you've certainly been enjoying yourself!""I lay on an operating table and lost my babies. I nearly bled to death, and my card was frozen. Do you have any idea what it took for me to get out of that hospital?"She advanced a step at a time, the knife's tip drawing a thin line of blood across the director's neck."Why? Why am I suffering while you get to have everything?""I'm Sasha Lane! I'm the one Peyton married! I should be the one standing here at this banquet!""You stole my place, my body, my husband—everything!"After that hysterical outburst, she suddenly grew calm, and a smile curled her lips."But that's all right. I'm here to take back what's mine."She shifted the knife in her hand, its blade pressed against the director's throat."Shayla, you have two choices.""First, admit in front of everyone that you're Shayla Moore and that you're the one who did this

Chapter 8

"Because she was jealous of me! She went to all this trouble to swap bodies with me. She…"Before she could finish, a trace of scorn crossed Peyton's eyes."Do you even believe that yourself?"Sasha fell silent.A few seconds later, she seemed to deflate, her voice dropping."Fine. I was jealous of her. I was jealous of her marriage, her money, and the life she had. It was everything I wanted.""So, I made a wish to swap bodies with her. I thought that was all it would take to have the life I dreamed of."Tears and snot smeared her face as she spoke."But I didn't know how miserable she was! I didn't know her husband had HIV, or that she had to kneel to eat, or that she only had sixty dollars a month to spend!""Peyton, I regret it. I really do! But I can't switch back…"Peyton listened, then turned to me, his gaze calm."Is she telling the truth?"I looked at him and tried to speak.I couldn't bring myself to lie to him.But I couldn't tell him the truth either.Peyton watched me for
