Skylar Reeves woke up to the smell of dust and old paper. That was wrong. Her apartment smelled like vanilla candles and leftover coffee. She blinked at the ceiling, waiting for her eyes to adjust, but nothing about the ceiling looked familiar either. Wooden beams. Cracks running through old plaster. A single bulb swinging slightly, though there was no wind. She sat up too fast and her back screamed in protest."Okay, ow," she muttered. "Since when do I have a back that does that?"Her voice came out wrong too. Thin. Papery. Like it belonged to someone twice her age.She dragged herself out of the unfamiliar bed and toward what looked like a cracked mirror propped against the wall. Her hand — spotted, wrinkled, definitely not the hand she'd gone to sleep with — reached out and wiped the dust off the glass. For a full five seconds, Skylar simply stared. An old woman stared back. Silver hair, thin and dry, escaping a braid. A face lined with wrinkles deep enough to hide secrets in. Sunke

The numbers were still glitching when Skylar looked down at her own wrist, where the countdown hovered like a stubborn tattoo.[System: ...recalculating.]"Recalculating what, exactly?" Skylar asked, watching the digits stutter — 3 days, 4 hours, then briefly 2 days, 22 hours, before snapping back like nothing had happened. "Are we early? Are we late? Is the apocalypse running on its own schedule now?"[System: Timeline integrity: 99.8%. Minor deviation detected. Cause unknown.]"Unknown is not a comforting word from something that's supposed to know everything."The bird that had shrieked off the rooftop earlier was gone now, the street eerily still except for a few pedestrians throwing worried looks at the sky, as if it might crack open right there and settle the argument for everyone.[System: Deviation currently within acceptable parameters. Recommend Host proceed with Main Quest.]Skylar exhaled slowly. Whatever that tremor had been, whatever the flickering numbers meant, she wasn

"Twenty-six hours," Skylar repeated, staring at the number hovering in her vision like it might change its mind if she glared hard enough. "It was three days an hour ago. What happened to three days?"[System: Timeline integrity: 91.4%. Deviation accelerating. Cause: unresolved.]"That's not an answer, that's a shrug with extra steps."Zane had gone very still beside her, dark eyes fixed on the patch of sky that had flickered wrong moments ago, now stubbornly, mockingly normal. "The Rift shouldn't be able to move its own schedule," he said, mostly to himself. "Not without a trigger.""A trigger like what?"He looked at her the way a man looks at a crack in his ceiling — like acknowledging it out loud might make it worse. "I don't know.""You don't know, or you don't want to say?""Both," Zane said, and started walking again, faster this time."Hey—" Skylar hurried after him, ancient knees complaining loudly about the sudden pace. "We're having a conversation!""I finished it.""I didn'

Six hours felt a lot shorter once you started actually counting them."Okay," Skylar said, pacing the narrow alley they'd ducked into, her voice pitched somewhere between practical and mildly hysterical. "Six hours. That's — that's not even enough time for a decent nap. What happened to three days? What happened to twenty-six hours? This countdown has commitment issues."[System: Deviation cause still unresolved. Recommend Host prioritize immediate survival preparation over commentary.]"I contain multitudes. I can do both."Zane leaned against the alley wall, arms crossed, shadows simmering restlessly at his collar like a dog that hadn't been told the fight was over. "Six hours isn't enough time to reach proper shelter. Not the reinforced kind, anyway.""Define proper shelter," Skylar said."Underground. Sealed. Preferably built by someone who anticipated the sky trying to eat the planet.""So basically nothing in this city.""Basically nothing in this city," Zane agreed grimly.Cori

Something scraped against the tunnel floor in the dark, slow and deliberate, like whatever it was wanted them to hear it coming.Skylar froze mid-breath. "Please tell me that's a rat."[System: Negative. Biological signature does not match rodent classification.]"I didn't ask for confirmation, I asked for comfort.""Quiet," Zane murmured, already stepping in front of her without seeming to notice he'd done it, shadows gathering thick and sharp around his hands. Corin moved to her other side, silver light flickering faint and ready along his fingers, and for a strange half-second Skylar felt something warm settle in her chest despite the very real possibility of imminent death — the feeling of being flanked, protected, wanted by two men who, four hours ago, had both actively tried to get rid of her.The scraping grew louder. Closer. Then, from the darkness ahead, a pair of eyes opened — low to the ground, glowing faint amber, blinking slowly like something waking up from a very long s
