I did not go home. Chapter 23: The Man in the Garden

I went in and I bolted the door and I did not go to the garden. I went up to the bedroom and sat on the edge of the bed with the light off and looked out of the window at the yard, and the yard was dark and the buoy was a black shape against the wall and nothing moved.At about eleven I heard the gate.It was a small sound, the click of the latch going up and then down again, and then boots on the path, and then nothing. Ronan talked until two in the morning and when he had finished I walked back to the cottage and lay on the bed in my clothes without sleeping and stared at the ceiling until the grey came up.He had voted against Eileen in 1975. Chapter 25: The Night of the Spark

The howl went on and then it stopped and the harbor was quiet again, and Declan was already running.I went after him.
