The best way to become a published author is to keep writing, no matter how terrible you are at first, and get feedback from readers as soon as possible. Long time anime fan here. So, I may point out a few references throughout the post. Becoming an author is like training to be a hero in My Hero Academia.

First you must discover your Quirk (i.e. your writing style). Once you have found your Quirk you must hone it and cherish it. After that, there is the heavy training phase of writing a lot every day. This could be just a few hundred words but it must be done on a daily basis. As with any Super Hero, you will have a mentor or two who can teach you a thing or two about writing.

First get a mentor – there’s nothing better than someone who is experienced and can guide you through the process of becoming a writer. Read all the works by writers whose style you admire to learn how to use language in all its variety. And remember that to write is to fall down – and to get up again. It’s much the same at the end of the day and as one does when one graduates. Go out into the world with your writing. This can be to literary magazines, writing competitions or even self-publishing your own work. And then there’s your debut novel.

Stop trying to find your writing voice and write the story you want to read. That’s the best missing book on the shelves. Your true writing voice will sneak in unnoticed while you’re too busy developing your imaginary characters. Years of trying to write ‘literary’ style writing resulted in me producing some pretty dire work. Mine is five minutes of absolute useless free writing to get all the nonsense out of your brain first, then you can start to focus on actual writing of the project for the session.

Minimise distractions by using apps to block your social media for the period of time you need to concentrate. The biggest killer of a productive writing session is the tendency to keep checking back for something.
