Time for a maybe-unpopular opinion: sometimes the fanfiction versions of characters handle this balance better than the original canon. Because fanfic writers can zoom in on the psychological aftermath of big canon events, exploring how two characters would actually help each other heal and grow from trauma, in slow, granular detail. Without the constraints of a main plot, they can let the emotional and relational growth take center stage. The balance feels more intimate, more focused on the quiet, repairing moments that a blockbuster plot often skips over. The romance becomes a detailed study in mutual recovery.
I keep coming back to agency. The most imbalanced romances steal the protagonist's agency, making the love interest the active party who 'fixes' things. The best ones give the protagonist more agency as the story progresses. They make harder choices, take bigger risks, and drive the plot forward—sometimes in the relationship, sometimes in their own lives. The romance feels balanced because it's between two actors, not an actor and a prop. The growth is visible in the increasing boldness and competence of their choices. The relationship becomes a partnership of equals precisely because both individuals have grown into their own power.
What about when the growth is about unlearning rather than learning? A character burdened by cynicism or a jaded worldview, and the romance slowly, patiently proves them wrong. Not in a cheesy 'love conquers all' way, but in small, quiet acts that chip away at their armor. The balance here is delicate—the author has to make the cynicism feel earned and the change feel gradual. If the love interest is too perfect or the change too swift, it feels like a fantasy. But when done right, it's a powerful arc: the character grows by surrendering a defensive posture that was once necessary but is now a prison. The romance provides the evidence needed to take that leap of faith.

Told with wit, warmth, and raw honesty, this novel is a journey through modern love: messy, magical, and sometimes maddening. It's about the people who entered her life, the ones who left, and the version of herself she’s still becoming.

For a different angle, consider novels where the passion is initially missing or forced. ‘The Arrangement’ by Mary Balogh is a Regency where a blind war hero and a poor relative enter a marriage of convenience. The passion develops slowly, born from daily care, shared vulnerability, and deep conversation. Vincent’s growth is about overcoming bitterness and relearning how to live and love without sight. Sophia’s is about recognizing her own worth beyond being useful. Their love story is the quiet, gradual process of two wounded people building a real home together. The emotional growth is the romance.
Sometimes the growth is tangential to the central romance but sparked by it. A character falls in love with someone who has a passion—for art, science, a cause—and through loving that person, they develop an appreciation for that passion themselves. Their world expands. They grow intellectually or culturally.
Or, they love someone from a different background, and in learning to understand that world, they shed their own prejudices and become more nuanced thinkers. The growth isn’t just about being a better partner, but a more complete, curious, and engaged human being. The romance is the door that opens them up to a wider universe of experience, and they walk through it.
