Honestly, most Drarry feels repetitive now. Everyone writes the same eight year, post-war, Ministry colleagues storyline. I skip those entirely.

What actually interests me are the rare pairs that twist the dynamic. Harry/Lucius, for instance, in fics like 'The Man Who Lived'. It's so inherently messed up and power-imbalanced that writers have to get creative, often leaning into dark political AU territory. You get this fascinating exploration of pureblood culture from the inside, with Harry as a very hostile guest.

Or, for something completely different, time-travel fics where Harry mentors a younger Draco, sometimes sliding into Harry/Tom Riddle with young Draco as a jealous complication. It's less about shipping them in a traditional sense and more about the psychological mess of influence and changed timelines. Those stories stick with me longer than any coffee-shop AU.

Draco/Harry is fine, but I'm all about the background ships that make their world feel lived-in. Give me a fic where the main plot is Drarry, but Ron is secretly dating Pansy Parkinson, and it's the funniest subplot because he's trying to hide it from Harry. Or where Blaise Zabini is casually dating three people and none of them mind.

It's those little details—like who runs the apothecary they argue in, or which ghost keeps gossiping about them—that make a fanfic memorable for me. The ship is just the vehicle; the best fics build a whole ecosystem around it.

You gotta start with the classic, Draco/Harry slash. It's the bedrock. 'Eclipse' by Mijan is practically required reading if you want that intense enemies-to-obsessed-lovers vibe with tons of magical theory thrown in. I sometimes think newer writers haven't even read it, which is a shame.

Beyond that, I'm super picky about characterization. I can't stand fics where Draco turns soft overnight. The good ones keep his sharp edges while letting Harry's stubbornness wear him down. 'Soup-pocalypse and the Great Leftover War' is weirdly hilarious and does this well—they're still sniping at each other while magically linked over a pot of soup. It shouldn't work, but it totally does.

Lately I've been digging into more niche pairings within the trio. Harry/Draco/Theo Nott is having a moment, especially in longer, plot-heavy fics where Theo acts as the rational buffer. It's less about the romance and more about three messed-up pureblood heirs navigating postwar politics, which frankly makes more sense than most canon sequels.
