Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot is the archetype for me. I find his methodical, psychological approach to crime far more engaging than action-oriented detectives. 'The Murder of Roger Ackroyd' is a masterclass in narrative misdirection that hinges entirely on Poirot's peculiar genius. The cerebral nature of the puzzles means the strength is entirely in the mind, not in physical prowess.

For a contemporary choice, Tana French’s Dublin Murder Squad books, especially 'In the Woods' with Rob Ryan, though Cassie Maddox in 'The Likeness' might be the stronger character. Their strength is deeply flawed and psychological, wrestling with personal trauma while trying to solve crimes, which makes the detection feel painfully real and high-stakes.

You can't talk about strong detectives without the originals. Sherlock Holmes defined the genre. His strength is pure, obsessive observation and deduction; it feels like a superpower. Conan Doyle’s stories are a blueprint. For a modern heir, I’d say Lisbeth Salander in Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series. She’s not a detective by trade, but her investigative skills are ferocious and digital. Her strength comes from a place of fury and trauma, making her utterly compelling and unpredictable in her methods.

I’m going to push back a little on the ‘best ever’ framing and suggest some where the detective’s strength isn’t about being right all the time. Walter Mosley’s Easy Rawlins is a perfect example—a regular guy in post-war LA using street smarts and a deep understanding of human nature, not formal deduction. His strength is survival and moral navigation in a racist system. The mysteries are good, but his character’s journey is what elevates them.

Or Josephine Tey’s Alan Grant, who’s more of a thinker. 'The Daughter of Time' is just him in a hospital bed, solving a centuries-old crime through documents. His strength is intellectual curiosity and patience, a nice change of pace from the usual chases.
