The fear that comes after is just as important as the sadness. The fear of being hurt again, the fear of never feeling that way again, the fear that you're 'broken.' Good YA doesn't rush to assure the character (and reader) that everything will be perfect. It allows that fear to exist. The resolution might simply be the character deciding to live with that fear and take a small risk anyway, or deciding that being alone is okay for now. It's about managing the scar, not pretending it doesn't exist.
The concept of the 'phantom limb' is so apt. Long after the initial pain fades, you might reach for them emotionally out of habit—to share a joke, to complain about your day. That sudden, lurching reminder of their absence can happen months or even years later. A realistic portrayal acknowledges that some loves leave a permanent imprint, a neural pathway that occasionally lights up. Healing isn't about erasure; it's about building so many new, strong pathways that the old one becomes just a quiet, seldom-traveled road in the back of your mind.
I find the most poignant portrayals focus on the quiet, specific losses, not just the big breakup scene. It's the inside jokes that suddenly have no audience, the song on the radio that now feels like a physical punch, the empty space on a text thread. The character has to rebuild their daily routines from the ground up because so much of it was intertwined with another person. That mundane devastation—realizing your favorite coffee shop is 'their' place too—often hits harder than any dramatic confrontation. It's the archaeology of a shared life that's now just yours again.
