You might want to look beyond the obvious Riordanverse. 'The Bartimaeus Sequence' by Jonathan Stroud is a masterclass in sarcastic narration. The djinni Bartimaeus tells large parts of the story, and his footnotes are laugh-out-loud funny, full of centuries of petty grievances and insults. The quests are more political intrigue and magical espionage in an alternate London, but they have that same high-stakes adventure feel. The humor is more intellectual and biting than Percy's, but it serves the world-building perfectly. I actually prefer its sharper wit.

On the flip side, 'The Enchanted Forest Chronicles' by Patricia C. Wrede is a lighter, more subversive take. Princess Cimorene runs away to be a dragon's librarian, and the humor comes from turning fairy tale tropes on their head. The quests involve dealing with wizards and rescuing princes, but always with a clever, practical twist. It's less about non-stop jokes and more about a consistently amused tone toward the fantasy genre itself. It's an older series but holds up wonderfully for its clever writing and charming perspective.

Humor and fantasy quests, huh? That combo immediately brings 'The Kane Chronicles' to mind, Rick Riordan's other big series. It's set in the same universe but with Egyptian mythology, and the sibling duo of Sadie and Carter has this hilarious back-and-forth narration. Their dynamic carries a lot of the comedy, with Sadie being especially sharp-tongued. The quest structure is solid, full of gods and magic, but it never takes itself too seriously. There's a scene where a magician turns a school dance into a giant frog that still makes me laugh.

Another one is 'Skulduggery Pleasant' by Derek Landy. It's a bit darker in places, but the skeleton detective Skulduggery and his teenage partner Valkyrie have amazing banter. The humor is very dry and witty, often coming from Skulduggery's centuries-old cynicism meeting modern teenage life. The quests are epic, saving the world multiple times over, but the dialogue constantly undercuts the grandeur, which is exactly what you're after. The first book hooked me with how it balanced a genuinely creepy villain with laugh-out-loud one-liners.

For something slightly younger but still brilliant, try 'How to Train Your Dragon' by Cressida Cowell. The books are wildly different from the movies—more chaotic, scribbly illustrations, and Hiccup's narration is hysterically self-deprecating. The quests are messy, disaster-prone adventures that never go to plan, and the humor comes from the sheer absurdity of the situations. It's less about epic prophecy and more about a very unlucky boy trying his best, which is incredibly charming.

Don't sleep on 'A Tale of Dark and Grimm' by Adam Gidwitz. It mashes up Hans Christian Andersen tales into a connected, bloody quest. The narrator interjects with darkly funny, almost macabre asides that somehow make the grim events weirdly hilarious. The kids go through horrific fairy tale scenarios, but the author's voice is so knowingly wry it creates a unique blend of horror and humor. It's not for the faint of heart, but if you like your laughs with a side of the grotesque, it's a wild ride. The quest feels earned and perilous, too.

What fantasy adventure books combine epic quests with humor?

Can we talk about the humor in world-building details? I love when an author adds funny, throwaway elements that make the world feel lived-in. Like in Discworld, the rules for the Ankh-Morpork Post Office, or in 'Kings of the Wyld', the mercenary bands having groupies and merch. That stuff gets me more than a punchline sometimes. It shows a playful mind behind the story.
