Dragon Ball ships always get weird if you think about the timeline. Goku and Bulma had this weird, sibling-adjacent thing going from literally the first chapter, which makes romantic fanfiction about them such a tightrope walk. The biggest hurdle is aging them up believably from those kid-days. You either set it after the series, where Goku's basically a galactic hermit and Bulma's a CEO grandma, or you try to force a 'what if' during the Android or Cell sagas. Neither feels totally natural.
Then there's the personality clash. Writing Goku as anything other than a food-and-fight obsessed goofball is a betrayal of character, but that also makes deep romantic introspection from him feel ridiculous. So much Goku/Bulma fic either turns him into a secretly sensitive guy, which is wrong, or makes Bulma do all the emotional heavy lifting while he's just confused, which gets old. The dynamic works better in humor or domestic slice-of-life, like fics about them accidentally co-parenting Pan or something, because the romance requires too much bending.
Honestly, the most convincing ones I've read lean into the absurdity. A fic where Bulma invents a device to translate 'fight-lust' into something resembling a date, or where she has to explain jealousy to him like a new attack technique. It acknowledges the gap instead of trying to paper it over with generic lovey-dovey stuff. The challenge is the core incompatibility; the fun is in the creative workarounds.
Trying to make Goku monogamous or domestically inclined for any length of time always breaks my suspension of disbelief. He'd get distracted by a strong ki signature and fly off for three years. Bulma would have to be okay with that, which isn't a romance most writers want to portray. So the challenge is inventing a reason for him to stay put, or redefining the relationship as something open/non-traditional that fits both characters. Not many attempt that last part.
Most people miss the foundational issue: their entire relationship is built on a massive asymmetry. Bulma knew Goku as a naive, feral child. Even when he's a grown adult who saves the universe, part of her brain probably still sees the kid who didn't know what a girl was. That 'first impression' barrier is huge to overcome in a fic without making Bulma seem predatory or Goku developmentally stunted. You have to address that shift in perception, not ignore it. Another common pitfall is reducing Bulma to just 'the nag' or 'the brain' and Goku to 'the muscle.' Good fics explore what they actually offer each other beyond stereotype. Maybe Goku's simplicity gives Bulma a break from her overcomplicated life, not as a dumb jock but as a calming force. Maybe Bulma's grounded, technological perspective helps Goku understand the world he's always saving in a new way. The bad fics are just 'genius tsundere falls for oblivious powerhouse.' It's lazy. I've dropped so many fics where their dialogue is just her yelling and him going 'hehe.' There's a seed of something interesting there about two people who shaped each other's lives from the very beginning, but it's buried under a lot of cliché.
A lot of the conflict in these stories feels manufactured. Since they're canonically lifelong friends who trust each other completely, writers have to invent reasons for tension, often making one of them act wildly out of character—like Goku being secretly jealous of Yamcha, or Bulma hiding a pregnancy. It strains credibility. The dynamics that work are low-stakes and built on their actual history: Goku not understanding Capsule Corp finances, Bulma being frustrated that he can't explain god-tier ki concepts to her, them reminiscing about the first dragon ball hunt. That grounded stuff feels real; the epic romance usually doesn't.
The classic 'opposites attract' template falls apart here because their worlds are so separate. Goku lives on a physical, instinctual level; Bulma lives in a realm of logic, invention, and social nuance. Bridging that gap without one character becoming an author's puppet is the real test. I've seen fics try to fix it by having Bulma develop an interest in martial arts theory, which feels forced, or Goku suddenly caring about capsule tech, which is worse. A subtler challenge is handling Vegeta. Even in a Goku/Bulma fic, Vegeta's shadow is long. Does he exist in this AU? Did he never come to Earth? Is he a rival? A past flame? Ignoring him feels weird, but including him often derails the main pairing. Writers get tangled up in love triangles that the source material never set up, and it feels like an insecure addition, like they're trying to add drama because the central dynamic isn't carrying the plot on its own. The best fics either make a clean break from canon or integrate the change with purpose, like having Vegeta arrive later and becoming an unexpected ally to their relationship, which is a fun twist if done right.

Calling out the obvious one first: the 'what if they actually ended up together' scenario. This isn't just a high school AU, it's a fundamental rewrite of the entire 'Dragon Ball' timeline. Did Chi-Chi ever exist? Is Vegeta even a factor? Does Goku still become a Super Saiyan? The most interesting fics I've read explore the butterfly effect. A less impulsive, maybe slightly more worldly Goku raised in part by Capsule Corp could shift everything about the Z Fighters' dynamic. Bulma's influence making him a more strategic fighter earlier is a common thread.
Another huge theme is the 'missed connection' or pining angle, set during the original series. That gap between the 21st and 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai, or the three years of training for the androids, becomes fertile ground. It's the quiet moments between world-ending threats where a writer can slow things down and explore a different kind of intimacy—Bulma fixing his gi, Goku bringing her a weird berry he found, that sort of thing. The emotional core is often about two people who've known each other since childhood realizing their bond has layers they never named.
Honestly, the domestic stuff post-'End of Z' is where I lose a bit of interest. It sometimes feels too much like just slotting Goku into Vegeta's place, but without the pride and rivalry that make VegeBul compelling. The best fics for me keep Goku's essential, baffling innocence intact even within a romance; he doesn't suddenly become suave. He's just Goku, trying to understand why holding Bulma's hand makes him feel warm and strong at the same time, and Bulma having to navigate loving someone whose brain is wired for battle and little else.
The first thing that strikes me about Goku x Bulma fics is how they're often built on the complete inversion of their canon dynamic. In 'Dragon Ball', she's the tech genius and he's the wilderness kid, but most stories push them together by making Goku … not Goku? I mean, they mature him up way too fast, giving him emotional intelligence he clearly lacks for most of the series. It's a common shortcut to get to the romance, but it feels like cheating.
Where I've seen it work better is in fics that slow everything way down. Instead of a big confession scene, it's Bulma noticing he remembers her coffee preference after years, or Goku quietly asking Chi-Chi for advice on a 'friend' who gets sad when he leaves. The growth feels earned when it's through those tiny, accumulated actions that echo their actual history. They've known each other since they were kids, so the good fics use that shared past as fertile ground, not an obstacle to bulldoze through.
Honestly, a lot of them fail because they try to make it a typical shoujo romance. The real interesting angle is how two people who love each other in a completely non-romantic way for decades might stumble into something else after everything they've been through—the androids, Buu, their own families. That untapped potential is what keeps me searching through the piles of poorly written fluff.
