CHAPTER ONE
“So that’s why I can only afford to keep just one of you employed at Regal Corporation,” Mr Vance used a big cotton handkerchief to wipe the sweat off his brow and adjusted his glasses. Suhaira turned to look at Jack in horror, as the implications of this bombshell from the boss sank in, but Jack was staring down at the table. Just ten minutes ago she had been giggling at Jack’s jokes. Now she felt as if her world was crumbling. She started to gather up her papers but Mr Vance motioned for her to remain seated.“There is some good news,” he said, “a huge housing development company, Bazaar Abodes, are giving us a chance to pitch a proposal to them to be their sole selling agents.” He glanced at them both. “I will decide on which one of you stays based on how many units you can sell in this development. Sorry it’s come to this. You have both been assets to the company. But now times are hard.” Suhaira stood up to follow Mr Vance out of the boardroom. “Suhaira, hold on,” Jack grasped

CHAPTER TWO
Dodoma, 3 Years Earlier“Suhaira, you have to calm down, you look great!” Zafeera spoke with great authority from the bed. Suhaira looked at her best friend with some exasperation. Newly engaged, she didn’t have to worry. After all, her marriage to Irfan had been on the cards for years. “I have to look good. David is probably used to seeing really hot girls in London.” Suhaira smoothed her blue top, remembering that blue was David’s favourite colour on her. She peered into the mirror for the umpteenth time and pushed her glasses up onto her nose as she surveyed her reflection critically. “You’re sure I look great?” she asked Zafeera, who rolled her eyes theatrically. “My Suhaira. You look great as always. You really need to relax!” For some reason, Zafeera didn’t seem too excited. “Do you imagine that he has changed?” Suhaira asked, picking up the black leather watch she had bought David as a welcome-back present. It had cost her a bomb, but she didn’t care. I’m going to be seei

CHAPTER THREE
“No way!” Zafeera looked at Suhaira with her jaw wide open. “Out of all the people in the world he is your new client!” Her brow furrowed. “Do you think it’s just a coincidence that David came to your firm or was it planned?” Suhaira stared at her. “That never occurred to me! What would he want with me after all this time? No, it has to be a coincidence.”For a moment, Suhaira considered the possibility. Maybe he was hoping he could mess up my life once again. Because he sure as hell isn’t interested in me; He proved that three years back. No way am I going to let him destroy me again. “So how does he look?”“Actually he looks really good,” Suhaira admitted reluctantly, embarrassed that she had even paid attention.“Better looking than Jack?” she asked slyly. Zafeera had been raving about Jack ever since she had caught a glimpse of him once at her office and was convinced Suhaira needed to stop being so cautious about relationships. She had been urging Suhaira to mingle and date for

Black and white!” Ruby was firm, “It will give you a stylish and elegant atmosphere.” “But our company colours are green and yellow,” Suhaira protested, already anticipating Mr Vance’s objections to the decor at their launch. For all she knew, he could use that as an excuse to sack her. Their stylish Corporate Party Planner shuddered dramatically. “I’ll just pretend I didn’t hear that,” she said, “Now let’s talk about food. I’m thinking canapes with a Tanzanian twist.” Ruby kept Suhaira on her toes the whole morning as they went through each detail for the Bazaar Abodes launch. Somehow, Suhaira had found herself landed with the entire responsibility of running and organizing the launch party, which had meant an overload of work. Suhaira welcomed the distraction as it kept her mind off David and Jack. It was almost lunchtime when Ruby finally closed her striped file with a bang. “I think we have made good progress,” she said, “Now let’s go and reward ourselves with an expensive l

CHAPTER FIVE
“Suhaira, you look gorgeous! But then, you always do.”“Thanks, David,” Suhaira replied, feigning nonchalance as she stepped into David’s Rolls Royce and settled on the leather seat. He had some soft music on the radio. Suhaira could not believe she was actually going through with this. Another meeting with David was the last thing she needed to cap off an already complicated week. But she had promised him, and she knew she had to put this chapter to bed. “All set?” he grinned as he shut the door behind her. As he did, another tantalising whiff of his fragrance dealt a blow to her forced calm. She put on a pair of sunglasses and looked ahead, avoiding his gaze. David had texted her the night before to say that he was taking her to a special place, but he wouldn’t tell her where. This was supposed to be a surprise but she had a very good idea where they were headed. Sure enough, they cruised down turned off at the Tanzania Wildlife Service signboard into the Dodoma National Park.

CHAPTER SIX
The day of the launch finally arrived. Suhaira had asked for the afternoon off so that she could get her hair and nails done, but no chance. Mr Vance wanted her at the venue to check the set up. Suhaira had protested that Ruby would do a spectacular job with her eyes closed but he had been firm. It seemed like he wasn’t taking any chances with their biggest client. She arrived at the launch venue, a luxurious hotel in Dodoma’s city centre, annoyed at the unnecessary waste of her time. Thank goodness she had picked up the dress and shoes from Maria the previous evening! Suhaira was directed to the ballroom and flung open the heavy mahogany doors, still cursing Mr Vance under her breath. Instead of the flurry of chaos she was expecting to encounter as part of the set-up, the room was already beautifully arranged. Swatches of black and white satin dominated the room, with matching cocktail tables. The flower arrangements were stunning: white roses on some tables and blooms that had b

The crowd in the ballroom had increased substantially in the short time that she had been away. The room was now filled to capacity and strains of music enhanced the lively atmosphere. Suhaira spotted David as soon as she walked in; he stood head and shoulders above most of the crowd and his rich laughter rang out across the room. There was a tall, skinny as a stick insect woman standing at his side as he held court with a group of well-dressed people. Just when I thought that this night can’t get worse, Suhaira thought as she took another deep breath, ready to face her old nemesis. Cecilia, David’s sister. A woman who hated her simply because she thought that Suhaira was not wealthy enough and therefore not worthy enough to associate with her and her ilk. Suhaira remembered how instrumental Cecilia had been in her break up with David three years ago.  Before she could change direction, David turned around and looked at her.

CHAPTER EIGHT
Thank goodness today is a Saturday!  This was Suhaira’s first thought as she woke up the next morning. She could not face her lying boss and colleague so soon. Would Mr Vance expect her to leave immediately or would he wait until the end of the month to fire her? Knowing him, he would choose the most painful, humiliating way of sacking her. Suhaira pondered the situation. Amidst the detritus, one thing was clear: She needed to start earning an income soon! But first, she needed to talk. Taking a deep breath, she picked up Grace’s phone and dialled the only person that she knew she could trust;  “I need you to come over,” she said.  “I’ll be there in twenty minutes,” Zafeera replied.  “So,” Zafeera said, putting her hands on her hips and glaring at Suhaira when she had told her the whole story, once they wer

CHAPTER NINE
A few hours later, she found herself sitting across a huge desk from Chief Al. Framed pictures of fancy buildings and houses covered the walls. “So I need someone to do the sales and marketing for Coral Palms at the actual site,” he said, “Do you think you are up to it?”“Would that mean that I would have to stay at the coast?” she asked. She felt a pang of uncertainty, what would her mother say?Chief Al’s belly wobbled as he chuckled, “Well it would be a very long commute to travel back to Dodoma every evening.”Suhaira could have kicked herself for coming up with such an asinine comment. This was a God sent opportunity, she’d better not mess it up. She squared her shoulders. “I would love to do it and I am sure you will be very happy with me.”“Good,” Chief Al shook her hand, “You can start tomorrow.”“Tomorrow?” “Yes of course. Didn’t you say that you were available immediately? She nodded mutely, her stomach clenching at the thought of things moving so swiftly. Oblivious to her
