The audiobook point is crucial for me. I drive a lot for work. Listening to them in order has been a journey. I've gone through all of them twice now. The second time, I appreciated the foreshadowing in early books for events that happen much later. McCall Smith is a subtle plotter. He'll mention a character or a place briefly, and it becomes important three books down the line. You only catch those connections in order, or on a re-read. It's incredibly satisfying.

Could someone list the next five after 'The Handsome Man's De Luxe Café'? I have up to that point but my local store has some later ones and I want to know what comes next. I lose track after the first dozen.

My grandmother devours these books. She doesn't worry about order; she just reads whatever the library has next. She says they all feel like visiting the same comforting friends, no matter the sequence. So maybe the 'correct' order depends on your reading personality. For analytical readers, chronological. For those seeking pure comfort, any order works. But for first-timers, I'd still say start at the beginning to form the attachment properly.

Honestly, half the fun for me is the ritual. I read one of these books every summer, in order, on my porch. It's my annual visit to Botswana. I'm on 'The Double Comfort Safari Club' this year. Having this tradition forces me to keep track of the order, and it spaces out the joy. I'd suggest not binging them all. Read them in order, but slowly. Savor each one. Let the time between books mimic the slow passage of time in Gaborone.

I'm just here to see what others say because I've been meaning to start this series for ages. My mom loves them and keeps telling me to read them, but I never know where to begin. All the titles sound so charming and similar! Might just take the top-voted answer here and run with it.

Meet Esmerelda Sleuth. Sleuth is her name and investigating is her game. (Paranormal Investigating, that is.)
Esmerelda makes a good living as an investigator in a rather progressive firm. She lives a stable and sensible life until she meets Lance; an old money "hottie" who works for a real estate firm next to her building. After accepting an invitation for a weekend getaway party, she quickly discovers that Lance has a secret. He is wealthy. That part is true. And, yes, he's procured a job as a realtor in the building next door. His secret is that he belongs to an underground society of humans who didn't abandon their connection to magic centuries ago when religion declared it evil and he has traveled through time specifically to find her and bring her back to his time to marry him. If that isn't enough of a far fetched tale to absorb, he informs her that she was born in his time to a family belonging to that same secret society and was promised in marriage to him as an infant. When enemies who didn't want to see the union of families take place made attempts on her life, her parents sent her into the future and erased her memories of them as a precaution.
Possessing virtually no belief in magic, ghosts, psychics, time travel, etc., it takes some doing on Lance's part to convince her to believe his story and go back with him. When she does, the lies, deceit and attempts on her life start all over again. Will she escape emotionally and physically unscathed?
"The Other Side Of the Mirror" is a steamy-paranormal-romance- mystery-thriller and book one of the Esmerelda Sleuth series.
With her enemies in pre-civil war Virginia still seeking her death, Esmerelda is forced to return to the future only days after wedding Lance. Because it was necessary to fake her death in order to stop her enemies from following her to the future, her new husband, Lance, was forced to stay behind. He’d placed a magic box for them to communicate until he found a way to safely be with her beneath the floorboards of the house.
Now, she must find it.
A task that is easier said than done!
“The Magic Box” is book two of the exciting paranormal-romance-mystery-thriller Esmerelda Sleuth Series
Forced to return to the past and then venture back into the realms of the dark lord to save her friend, Esmerelda faces loss, love, and a new awakening in this final installment of the Esmerelda Sleuth Series.
Filled with excitement, love, loss, time travel, family dynamics, dimension hopping, and a few vampires, this is the completion of a story that you won't want to miss.

The audiobooks are narrated by Lisette Lecat, and she is absolutely perfect. She captures Mma Ramotswe's wisdom, Mma Makutsi's ambition, and all the male voices with such warmth. Listening in order is a fantastic immersive experience. I've done it twice.
I once tried to chart the timeline using the ages of the foster children. It's pretty consistent with a real-time passage of years, matching the publication dates. That alone tells you that the author intends a direct, chronological read. The children, Motholeli and Puso, grow up. Charlie becomes a young man. You miss that beautiful, gradual coming-of-age if you read out of order. Follow the numbers on the book spines; they match the internal chronology of the story.
Library availability might dictate your order, and that's perfectly fine! These books are a treasure, and any order is better than not reading them at all. My local branch never had them all at once, so I read based on what was returned. It was a chaotic but wonderful way to meet the characters, like piecing together a friend's life story through anecdotes told out of sequence. Eventually, I filled in all the gaps. The non-linear approach made me focus on each book's individual philosophy instead of just plowing through for plot. There's no wrong door into this world.
My book club read the first one and then jumped to a later one for comparison. It was fine, but we all agreed we missed the context. The inside jokes, the recurring clients, the subtle growth of the secretary's position—it all felt a bit hollow without the foundation. We went back and read them in order after that. It's a series that rewards patience and linear investment.
The series order is perfectly linear. Think of it as one long, sprawling novel broken into many volumes. Events in one book are frequently mentioned in the next, even if just in passing. A client from an earlier story might pop up again, or a solved case might be referenced. This creates a wonderful sense of a living, breathing community. To preserve that, follow the timeline the author wrote.
