Audiobook listener here! The narrator, John Keating, is phenomenal and adds so much to the Irish atmosphere. I listened to them all, and I’m glad I did it in order because his vocal characterizations for everyone develop and become more nuanced as the series goes on. You can tell he grows more comfortable with the characters, much like the reader does. Listening out of order might make a character’s voice sound slightly off if you heard a later performance first.

I’m a completist, so I even read the short story collections, 'An Irish Country Cookbook' and 'The Wily O’Reilly: Favourite Stories from an Irish Country Doctor', in publication order relative to the novels. It’s probably overkill. For a normal reader, just the main novels in numerical order is perfect. The short stories are delightful extras that fill in gaps, but they aren’t essential to the main flow of Barry’s story from rookie to established partner.
