A minor point: The early books are sometimes categorized as 'cozy-adjacent' but they get darker and more complex. If you start with a later, darker book and then go back to an earlier, lighter one, the tone might feel inconsistent. Publication order maintains the intended evolution in seriousness.

My library has a 'readalike' list for Tess Monaghan that includes Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone and Sara Paretsky's V.I. Warshawski. Those series also demand publication order for the same reasons—the protagonist's personal life evolves. It's a hallmark of the female PI subgenre, I think.

The correct order is publication order, full stop. Anyone saying otherwise is overcomplicating it. Mystery series with a strong character progression are meant to be read as written. You wouldn't read Harry Potter out of order, right? Same principle applies here, even if the cases are adult and standalone.

Honestly, the order isn't some cryptic puzzle. It's the order they were published. Libraries and retailers list them that way. The complication comes from the later standalone novels like 'After I'm Gone' or 'Lady in the Lake' being excellent and often shelved next to the Tess books, which might confuse someone. But Tess isn't in those. Stick to the list with her name in the series title, read by publication year, and you're golden.

My book club is considering a mystery series. A linear, complete series like this is perfect. We can read one a month and see the character grow. The clear order makes it easy to assign and discuss.

Book 1 Saints and Sinners
She was the light to my dark.
The saint to my sinner. with her innocent eyes and devilish curves.
A Madonna that was meant to be admired but never touched.
Until someone took that innocence from her.
She left.
The darkness in my heart was finally complete.
I avenged her, I killed for her, but she never came back.
Until I saw her again. An angel dancing around a pole for money.
She didn’t know I owned that club. She didn’t know I was watching.
This time I won’t let her escape.
I will make her back into the girl I knew.
Whether she likes it or not.
Book 2 Judge and Jury
I can’t stop watching her.
I’m not even sure I want to.
Taylor Lawson, blonde, beautiful, and totally oblivious to how much dangers she’s in.
She’s also the one juror in my upcoming murder trial that hasn’t been bought.
The one who can put me behind bars for a very long time.
I know I should execute her.
After all that’s what I do.
I am the Judge.
I eliminate threats to The Family.
And Taylor is a threat.
But I don’t want to kill her.
Possessing her, making her love me seems like a much better plan for this particular Juror.

The romance subplot is a slow burn, and the spark is definitely in 'Baltimore Blues.' If you're into that will-they-won't-they tension stretched over multiple books, you absolutely must start here. The first interactions between Tess and Crow are charged with a specific kind of antagonistic chemistry that defines their relationship for books to come. Skipping to a point where they're an established couple (or not) would rob you of all that delicious buildup. It's a key part of the series' appeal for many readers.
Consider the seasons. 'Every Secret Thing' has a hot, suffocating summer feel. 'What the Dead Know' has a melancholy, rainy-day vibe. 'Sunburn' feels like a sticky beach-town off-season. 'Lady in the Lake' has a specific late-60s atmosphere. 'Dream Girl' is claustrophobic and perfect for a bleak winter day. Read seasonally!
Wow, 50 comments on how to read books. I love the internet. Everyone has a system. Meanwhile, my system is 'whatever's on the shelf at the used bookstore for $3'. That's how I found 'To the Power of Three'. No regrets.
Honestly, just look up a list of her books and read the summaries. The one that gives you that 'I need to know what happens' feeling is the one to start with. Order is secondary to engagement. Fall in love with her writing first, then you'll want to read everything, in whatever order.
Don't forget the short stories! They're not essential to the main plots, but they offer cool little character moments. 'The First Farewell' is one. If you're a completionist, you'd slot those in too, probably after the novel they were released alongside. They're like DVD bonus scenes for the series.
Honestly, just read 'Sunburn' and then go back to 'Baltimore Blues'. The whiplash is instructive. The early book is a straight-ahead mystery; the later one is a tense, atmospheric character study where the crime is almost secondary. The evolution is stark: from writing about a detective to writing from inside the psychology of people entangled in a crime. Her command of pace and unease improves dramatically.
The best order is the one that keeps you reading. If you find 'Farmer Boy' slow, skip it and come back. If you want maximum emotional impact, read the seven Laura-centric books straight through. Personally, I think 'The Long Winter' is the pinnacle of the series, and it hits hardest if you've read the preceding books and seen the family's struggles accumulate. So at least read 'Big Woods' through 'Silver Lake' before it. The order isn't just about chronology—it's about pacing and emotional buildup.
