I picked the Historian ending because the lore of this game is just so damn cool. Getting all 100 stone tablet fragments scattered across the whole world for that ending took a lot of work though. But the ending cutscene where you piece together the history of the isekai world and get to see the real truth was totally worth it for a lore buff like me.

I just caught up on the latest arc of 'My Magical Dungeon is a Real-Estate Empire' and wow, the last chapter really threw a curveball. The hero summoned a literal city planner from modern-day Tokyo to help him manage his labyrinth, and now there's a whole subplot about zoning disputes with the local dragon council. It's absurd but weirdly gripping. I'm mostly here for the harem dynamics though, and the author finally gave the elf archer some serious backstory. Turns out her cold exterior stems from a failed arranged marriage to a noble from a rival forest kingdom. Feels a bit tacked-on, but it explains her hostility towards the new half-demon merchant girl who just showed up. The power scaling is getting out of hand, but I'm too invested to stop now.

I'm always leery of stories that have really professional, stock-photo-style covers. Often such stories are trying too hard to look published and really may be all style and no substance. The best stories on this site have pretty simple, even amateurish-looking covers that were made with Canva. (The heart is in the writing, not in the marketing of the story.) A beautifully drawn original cover, on the other hand, often indicates that the author has invested a lot of time in the story, which is a good sign. You have to learn to read the visual language of covers. A generic-looking shirtless male cover? Probably a generic inside story. A clever, thematic, original cover? High chances of a thoughtful inside story.

For official releases, the safest option to get AlphaPolis published work would be their store, although for digital versions of books I read, sometimes the same title is available on Kindle Unlimited. For fan translation version of AlphaPolis’s published work, I personally recommend to use aggregation site Mangadex as they update timely and relatively are stable. I found a very good video series from a niche channel about this game. It explains step by step how to get every unlock. I made a YouTube search for the Japanese title of the video series. Although it is in Japanese, the video is very clear to follow, as it contains many visual cues, like the menu navigation and the battles themselves. This is much better than just reading a long text explaining the same thing.

When I’m searching for quality Phan fanfiction (that’s Dan and Phil to those who don’t know) on Archive of Our Own, a lot of the time I have to dig through a lot of mediocre stories to get to the really good stuff. Most of the quality stories I’ve found have been through sorting the fic by kudos, bookmarks, or comments, and then browsing through tags such as ‘Dan and Phil AU’ or ‘Phan Fluff’ (for non-Phan readers, this sort of thing is typically pretty easy to find). While many writers in the Phan fandom do a great job of portraying the two, some individual stories are really, really good at capturing the pair’s relationship, whether that’s in an AU where they’re soulmates, in college, or even in a dystopian future. Many of these stories are hidden amongst others of far fewer hits, and are truly gems. Also note that lots of fandoms (especially this one) have curated collections of fanfiction on Tumblr or Twitter or even just lists of recommended stories. This is how I found some of my absolute favorite comfort fics – there’s a slow-burn coffee shop AU that I read at 2AM and beamed with a large, idiot grin on my face for the rest of the day. Comment and kudos, etc – writers in this fandom work SO HARD for their creative output and need all the love they can get. Make up a cover story for any reason you have for knowing something. For medicine, tell people your grandmother was a healer. For advanced math, say you found an old scholar's notes or something. People will look for inconsistencies in your story, so practice it until it feels natural, and until you can conjure up appropriate emotions to go along with the story (i.e. you feel a pang of nostalgia when thinking about your grandmother teaching you to make potions, or you scowl in frustration whenever you think about losing that notebook with all your math problems in it). Your cover story is your first line of defense against inquisitive mages and suspicious nobles.

Looking at chapter length, one can see that in the initial stages of a story, the author uses very short chapters, often ending in a cliffhanger. As the story gets more readers, chapters increase in length and get more detailed. By chapter 100 the author is happy to take detours to explain the world in more detail. This evolution in chapter length is not just a sign of lack of discipline, it shows the author’s growing confidence in his or her story.
