Will it be considered as smut or as romance on Wattpad? There are readers who want closed-door/fade-to-black scenes and there are those who want extremely explicit detailed scenes. Most top-rated stories are in between – they are extremely steamy to satisfy the heat-seekers but not so graphic that others who like to read while feeling the tension instead of reading detailed scenes would be put off. In order to achieve this a writer would have to be extremely good at writing sensually charged scenes and then leave the rest to the reader’s imagination. Anticipation and emotions are more important than details. Meeshawrites is a great example of this kind of writer. She writes extremely sensually charged scenes but they are never graphic. Her scenes are just extremely sensual and therefore very satisfying for readers who are looking for good smut but are also not off-putting for those who prefer to read while feeling the tension instead of reading detailed scenes. The stories that have smut in them and are rated high are likely to have this kind of approach to writing scenes with smut in them. Staying too much in the explicit territory may exclude some readers due to their age or because of their personal preferences while not enough smut may have led readers to expect more smut than what was delivered by the writer under the smut tag.

I am really curious as to why someone would search for “best Dramione introductory story” (I assume you are either new to fanfiction and are looking to explore, or a long-time reader who is just bored with the “safe” stuff). For someone new to the series of Draco/Harry stories, I would recommend you start with the most accessible and highest quality stories. Hopefully, they are well-tagged so that you can easily find more of the same type of story. For someone who is deep in the fandom, I would recommend starting with specific kinks or even pairing that they haven’t yet read. For example, the “best” introductory Dramione story for someone just looking to get into the series would probably be “The Right Thing to Do” series, a fairly popular Dramione story that is written rather well and is pretty vanilla. On the other hand, for someone really deep in the fandom, the “best” Dramione story would probably be an intensely dark, psychological Tomione story. The top-voted answer on such a thread is often the safest, most mainstream story on the list, not necessarily what the asker is looking for.

I'll preface this by saying rankings are so subjective but if you're looking for the rawest form of erotic content with plot to back it up (so not porn), Killing Stalking has sort of a cult following for a reason. The dark twisted psychological horror is wrapped up in a beautiful little boy story and is just masterfully tensioned. Obviously it's not a comfortable read but that's because it explores the topics of obsession and abuse in a twisted form and isn't exactly romance. But if you're looking to be gripped by a very very disturbed dynamic and are in the right headspace to read it, it's definitely a standout read.
For a more recent webnovel, Painter of the Night seems to be getting a lot of love lately. I haven’t read it myself, but the art is apparently gorgeous and adds a ton of value to the story.

I have a soft spot for the ‘old school’ digital pioneers. I’m thinking of people like Lora Leigh whose Breeds series (paranormal) used to be everywhere in the early 2000s. Or Shayla Black whose Wicked Lovers series is some of the best modern erotic romantic suspense out there. The smut in these books can feel a bit dated at times. The alpha males can be rather dominating in a somewhat less aware way to present days and the language can be rather more clinical and/or use more euphemisms but these authors are true foundations of the genre. Reading them is like watching a genre grow up. You can see the beginnings of modern consent discussions and of female agency as well. And yes, there is plenty of steamy sex in them too – often in creative and unusual scenarios.
When I read these authors, I can see where contemporary romantic fiction is coming from. I can even see the seeds of contemporary discussions of consent, and women’s agency, and all of that – but mostly I am reading them for the steam, which is creative and very enjoyable. If you’re a completist, or you just want to read some historical fiction that helps to explain how we got from there to here – that is, from clandestine distribution of hardcover books to this amazing open smut market that we have today – reading some of the earlier specialists in this field is kind of fascinating.

Library Genesis or Z-Library: Yes, I know, this is sort of in opposition to buying the book by the author now, who has already earned from their Wattpad stories, that were later published as ebooks. But sometimes these ‘illegal’ archives are the last resort for people who are unable to buy the commercial edition of a book for whatever reason (including it not being distributed to their country). Again, I’m not advocating for this sort of thing. But sometimes these websites function as nothing more than huge, last-resort archives of out of print books.

Normally I’ve archived them and just search through my archive to pick out ones I’ve read before

I recently found some really great ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ tales on Wattpad. While many of the tales followed typical tropes, there were a couple of the higher rated tales that really stood out from the crowd. These stories had a really fresh take on unconventional relationships and I really enjoyed them.
There are also many stories that are based in alternate universes to the Fifty Shades one and have changed up the characters too. They have based the stories off the original Fifty Shades story and just re-worked it to fit their own imaginations which is very impressive. It’s almost like joining a book club but instead of having to read the same book as everyone else you can just search for fifty shades and read all the different interpretations of the same story. There are so many unique Fifty Shades inspired stories on Wattpad and it’s great to see how people can interpret a story in so many different ways.

I have a simple offline reader for Wattpad called ‘Wattpad Offline Reader’ which works fine for me for downloading chapters and it’s been a lifesaver on my camping trip this week with patchy signal. The cache on this one is also pretty useful as it means I can continue to read halfway downloaded chapters. Simple and not a lot of frill but a nice little feature is being able to see a list of the chapters you’ve downloaded – feels like I’ve got a bookshelf in my pocket!

While it’s possible to find great books on any platform (free or paid), the platforms themselves matter less than your ability to filter and the information you get from other readers. Learning to use advanced search operators can help you find more of what you need on any platform. For example, AO3 allows you to exclude tags, pair up characters, and set a word count. Google search can also be filtered by using “site:[website URL]” followed by your search terms to only look for information within a single website. Furthermore, word of mouth is valuable. Find a reviewer on Goodreads or a Twitter user who reads in a similar vein to yourself and they can alert you to free books, new authors publishing on free platforms, and even older archives of books that you may have otherwise missed. Essentially, the best sources of information are not necessarily the most obvious, and it is building a network of sources that will provide the most relevant information to you as a reader.

If the real concern is accessibility (e.g., you use a screen reader that doesn’t handle PDFs well), then yes, that’s a valid concern and you should contact the author for an accessible version. It is unlikely that an anonymous download site for books would care about accessibility (they are scanned in poorly, often as formatted images of text, not as well-edited text documents). So, it is better to go straight to the source of the book and ask for a version that will work for you.
