It's wild to think the first and last Marple novels published are separated by 46 years. What other detective had that long a publication run with the same author? Reading them in that order is like taking a long, slow walk through most of the 20th century with a very sharp-eyed companion. The social changes are as compelling as the murders.

The publication order has a big gap between 1930 and 1942. World War II happened. Christie wrote other things. It's interesting to ponder what made her return to Marple during the war. Maybe the comfort of a stable English village was appealing during chaos. The books from the 40s have a certain coziness amidst the tension.

I think people overcomplicate this. Just read the twelve Miss Marple novels in the order they were published. That's the simplest path. The list is: 1. The Murder at the Vicarage (1930), 2. The Body in the Library (1942), 3. The Moving Finger (1942), 4. A Murder is Announced (1950), 5. They Do It with Mirrors (1952), 6. A Pocket Full of Rye (1953), 7. 4.50 from Paddington (1957), 8. The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side (1962), 9. A Caribbean Mystery (1964), 10. At Bertram's Hotel (1965), 11. Nemesis (1971), 12. Sleeping Murder (1976). The short stories are wonderful supplements, but this is the backbone.
