What Is The Full Reading Order Of Michael Connelly'S Lincoln Lawyer Series?

Reading Bosch crossover books first got me invested, but I lost track after The Law of Innocence. Should the Haller novels follow Mickey's court cases chronologically, or is there a better sequence to follow?

I tried the combined Bosch/Haller order once and burned out around book fifteen. It's a marathon. My advice? Read the Haller series straight through. If you fall in love with Connelly's LA, then circle back and read the Bosch novels in their own order. Mixing them on a first read is like trying to watch two TV series simultaneously by air date—possible, but exhausting and not necessarily more rewarding.

A friend told me to read the Bosch series first, which I did, and then jumping into 'The Lincoln Lawyer' felt like meeting an old friend's rival. It adds a layer of dramatic irony because you know Harry's side of things. If you have the time, starting with the early Bosch novels like 'The Black Echo' gives you a richer sense of the LA Connelly is building. Then when Mickey rolls in, you understand the ecosystem he's operating in, cops and all.

I just read them in publication order, skipping the non-Haller books, and didn't feel lost. The core series is: 'The Lincoln Lawyer', 'The Brass Verdict', 'The Reversal', 'The Fifth Witness', 'The Gods of Guilt', 'The Law of Innocence', and the new one, 'Resurrection Walk'. That's the cleanest path if you only care about Mickey's journey as a defense attorney. The crossovers are neat but not essential to understanding his character arc from cynical hustler to... well, a slightly less cynical hustler with a conscience.

I disagree with the thematic approach suggestion. The character development is linear and specific. Mickey's relationship with his daughter, his ex-wives, and his own sobriety progresses in real time across the books. Jumping around spoils that gradual change. You need to see him in 'The Lincoln Lawyer', still a bit of a sleazy operator, to appreciate the more grounded, weary attorney he becomes in 'Resurrection Walk'. Publication order preserves that arc.

I'm waiting for the next one to drop. Connelly's still writing, so any 'full' order is temporary. That's the fun of following a living series—the list keeps growing. The current endpoint is 'Resurrection Walk,' but in a year or two, we'll be adding another title to the end of this conversation.

What is the recommended reading order for Michael Connelly Lincoln Lawyer series?

Okay, so this one actually gets a little messy because Connelly loves to weave his characters together. If you're coming in fresh for Mickey Haller, the defense attorney, you should absolutely start with 'The Lincoln Lawyer'. That's non-negotiable. It sets up his whole world, his office in the backseat of the Lincoln, and his complex relationships. From there, the straightforward path is just publication order: 'The Brass Verdict', 'The Reversal', 'The Fifth Witness', 'The Gods of Guilt', and then 'The Law of Innocence'. That's the pure Lincoln Lawyer sequence. But here's where it gets tangled: 'The Brass Verdict' is basically a crossover with Harry Bosch, and it's a direct sequel to 'The Lincoln Lawyer' AND Connelly's Bosch novel 'The Black Echo'. You don't need to know Bosch's backstory, but it adds layers. Some purists insist you read the early Bosch books first for full context, which feels like a huge commitment to me. My take? Stick with Mickey's core books. If you fall in love with the universe, then circle back to Bosch. Starting anywhere else but that first Haller book is just asking for confusion about who this guy is and why he operates the way he does. The later books, especially 'The Law of Innocence', really build on his established reputation and past cases.
