Okay, so this one actually gets a little messy because Connelly loves to weave his characters together. If you're coming in fresh for Mickey Haller, the defense attorney, you should absolutely start with 'The Lincoln Lawyer'. That's non-negotiable. It sets up his whole world, his office in the backseat of the Lincoln, and his complex relationships.
From there, the straightforward path is just publication order: 'The Brass Verdict', 'The Reversal', 'The Fifth Witness', 'The Gods of Guilt', and then 'The Law of Innocence'. That's the pure Lincoln Lawyer sequence. But here's where it gets tangled: 'The Brass Verdict' is basically a crossover with Harry Bosch, and it's a direct sequel to 'The Lincoln Lawyer' AND Connelly's Bosch novel 'The Black Echo'. You don't need to know Bosch's backstory, but it adds layers. Some purists insist you read the early Bosch books first for full context, which feels like a huge commitment to me.
My take? Stick with Mickey's core books. If you fall in love with the universe, then circle back to Bosch. Starting anywhere else but that first Haller book is just asking for confusion about who this guy is and why he operates the way he does. The later books, especially 'The Law of Innocence', really build on his established reputation and past cases.

Publication order, no question. Start with 'The Lincoln Lawyer', then proceed through 'The Brass Verdict', 'The Reversal', 'The Fifth Witness', 'The Gods of Guilt', and 'The Law of Innocence'. That's the cleanest arc for Mickey Haller's character. The Bosch crossovers work well enough on their own if you just stick to this list.

Honestly? I think people overcomplicate this. Unless you're a total completionist, just grab 'The Lincoln Lawyer' and see if you like his style. If you do, keep going with the next one about Mickey. The connections to the other series are more like fun Easter eggs than required reading. The core of each book is a self-contained legal case.
I read 'The Reversal' without having touched a Bosch book and followed it just fine. The narration explains what you need to know. Sometimes diving into a massive, interconnected universe reading list can suck the fun right out of a good thriller. Start with the first Haller book, and if you get hooked, the natural impulse will be to pick up the next one on the shelf. That's it. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of a really good page-turner.

publication order is the only order that makes real sense. Connelly's LA is a living thing, and events in one series ripple into another. Trying to read just the Haller books in isolation means you'll hit 'The Brass Verdict' and miss why the judge's decision carries so much weight—it's a direct consequence of a Bosch plotline. Sure, you can follow it, but the emotional payoff is thinner.
I tried jumping straight into 'The Fifth Witness' once on a friend's recommendation and felt completely adrift. Haller's dynamic with his investigator, his stance on the system, even his daughter's role—it all develops linearly. Skipping around ruins that slow, deliberate character arc. Just go in the order they were written; the author laid the breadcrumbs for a reason.
