I'm always more interested in the puzzle than the person solving it, but a detective's mind can make a book. I think Louise Penny's Armand Gamache is a standout because his strength is emotional intelligence. He doesn't just deduce; he understands people. The murders in 'Still Life' are almost secondary to watching him navigate the politics of the Sûreté and the secrets of Three Pines. It's less about forensic clues and more about the weight of human motive.

On the completely opposite end, I love Sherlock Holmes pastiches that get his alien logic right. Anthony Horowitz's 'The House of Silk' captures that blend of cold deduction and occasional, startling empathy. Holmes feels powerful because his mind works on a different plane, and watching him explain his leaps is the whole joy. A strong detective, for me, is one whose thought process you want to follow, even if you can't match it.

Honestly, I get bored if the detective is too polished. Give me someone flawed and messy. Tana French writes these detectives who are psychologically cracked by their cases. In 'In the Woods', Rob Ryan is a terrible mess of a person, his childhood trauma completely warping his investigation. That feels real. The strength isn't in being right all the time; it's in the desperate, often wrong, grind toward some version of truth.

Or take Cormoran Strike. He's grumpy, physically struggling, and his personal life is a disaster zone. But he's dogged and sees things others miss because he's an outsider. Those imperfections make his successes feel earned, not just handed to a genius. A strong character needs those weak spots.

Don't overlook older series. Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe is a fantastic creature of habit—too brilliant to leave his brownstone, making his legman Archie Goodwin do all the legwork. Their dynamic is the real mystery engine. Wolfe's intellect feels immense because it's so deliberately deployed, like a siege weapon. Archie's voice, all wit and street smarts, perfectly complements it. It’s a classic formula that still crackles.

I just finished 'One by One' by Ruth Ware and have thoughts. The corporate setting with a snowed-in chalet was fun, but the real draw was the main character's gradual shift from passive observer to active investigator. She starts out seeming anxious and overwhelmed, which makes her eventual determination to uncover the truth feel earned. It's not a police procedural, but an 'everywoman' stepping up, using her specific knowledge of the group dynamics to piece things together. Her strength is in her attention to detail and her growing courage, not in any pre-existing expertise.
