Honestly, I'm just scrolling to see if anyone says 'The Boys' comic. That'd be a... choice. The show is brilliant satire. The comic is mostly just gross for grossness' sake. I'd call the show essential viewing for deconstruction, but maybe skip the source material unless you have a very strong stomach for edginess.

Geoff Johns's 'Flashpoint' is essential not necessarily for its own story (a dark alternate timeline), but for its seismic impact. It was the event that rebooted the entire DC Universe into the New 52.

The story itself is a gripping 'what if' where Barry Allen wakes up in a nightmare world. But reading it shows you how massive crossover events can literally rewrite continuity. It's a fascinating case study in corporate comics' need to refresh and restart their universes, for better or worse. The emotional core of Barry trying to fix his mistake is strong, too.

For me, essentials have to include 'Batman: Year One'. It's the definitive Batman origin, sure, but it's also a tight, gritty crime noir. Frank Miller's writing is focused and brutal, and David Mazzucchelli's art is perfectly matched—all shadow and substance.

It shows how to ground a superhero in a believable world without losing the mythic quality. Gordon's storyline is just as compelling as Bruce's. This book didn't just tell a Batman story; it defined the tone for Batman stories for decades afterward. You can't talk about Batman without it.

A lot of these lists are very serious. What about 'Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E.' by Warren Ellis and Stuart Immonen? It's the essential antidote to superhero comics taking themselves too seriously.

It's a hilarious, violent, ridiculously over-the-top romp that makes fun of every stupid comic book trope while being an amazing comic itself. The dialogue is quotable, the action is insane, and it's pure joy from start to finish. Sometimes essential reading means remembering that comics are supposed to be fun, dammit.

Honestly, skip the obvious classics everyone shouts about for a second. Go find 'Astro City' by Kurt Busiek. It's not about one hero; it's about an entire living, breathing city full of them. You get stories from the perspective of the rookie hero, the jaded veteran, the civilian who cleans up after the battles, even the alien invader.

It captures the wonder and the weight of a world with superheroes better than anything else. It's essential because it's about the heart of the genre—the human experience within the fantastic. Start with 'Life in the Big City'.
