Focus on Max and Ada first. Their uneasy partnership is the spine of the novel. Silas is the obvious antagonist, but the more interesting conflicts are between Max and his brother Kael, and within Ada herself as she wrestles with the consequences of her work. Mika's there to remind everyone of the human cost. The others are important for the overall tapestry, but those five are the heart of the character drama.

Alright, let's talk about 'Megaton'. This one's a doozy with a huge cast, so buckle up.

The absolute core trio you'll live with from start to finish is Max Cannon, the grizzled ex-soldier who just wants to be left alone but gets dragged into everything; Ada Chen, the brilliant, morally-flexible scientist who understands the 'Megaton' energy source better than anyone; and Silas Vane, the corporate warlord who wants to weaponize it. Their dynamic drives the whole story—Max's weary pragmatism versus Ada's cold curiosity versus Silas's ruthless ambition.

Then you've got the supporting crew that fleshes out the world. There's Kael, Max's younger brother who idolizes him but gets recruited by Silas's faction, creating a fantastic personal conflict. Mika, a scavenger kid from the irradiated zones who becomes Max's unofficial sidekick, provides the heart. Colonel Vance is the by-the-book military buffer trying to contain the crisis, and 'The Curator' is this mysterious figure who guards the old-world secrets about what Megaton really is. Honestly, I sometimes forgot a few of the secondary corporate lieutenants, but those seven are the ones whose chapters I never skimmed.

The character web is pretty dense. You've got your central three: the weary muscle (Max), the amoral brain (Ada), and the capitalist id (Silas). Then it branches out into family (Kael), conscience (Mika), the state (Colonel Vance), and history (The Curator). What I found really compelling was how none of them are ever fully on the same page, even when they're technically allies. Max and Ada team up out of necessity, but the mistrust is palpable in every dialogue. Mika looks up to Max, but her optimism constantly challenges his cynicism in a way that feels genuine, not saccharine. Kael's arc from admiration for his brother to resentment to a kind of tragic understanding is one of the best parts of the later books. They all orbit around the mystery of the Megaton energy source, each interpreting it through their own lens—a weapon, a tool, a god, a curse. It's that multiplicity of perspectives that makes the world feel lived-in.

Max, Ada, Silas. Kael and Mika are crucial too. The Colonel and The Curator are important but feel more like forces of nature than people you get to know deeply. Ada's the most interesting by far—her chapters are a masterclass in someone rationalizing increasingly terrible choices for 'the data'. She's not a villain, not a hero, just terrifyingly smart and detached. Silas is a bit one-note as the corporate bad guy, but he's effective.

I see a lot of people listing the main characters, but I think the key distinction in 'Megaton' is between the plot characters and the theme characters. Max, Ada, and Silas are obviously vital for the plot—they're the engine. But for me, the key characters for understanding the novel's soul are Mika and The Curator. Mika isn't just a sidekick; she's the lens through which we see the world after the Megaton technology, the lived-in cost of it all. Her wonder and fear ground the high-tech spectacle. The Curator, who barely has any page time comparatively, represents the world before—the buried history and the original sin. Without those two, the story would just be a cool sci-fi thriller. With them, it becomes this melancholic question about progress and memory. So yeah, list the mains, but don't sleep on those two if you want to get what the book is actually about.
