On a more concrete level, there are clear mechanisms the manga shows: conditioning, manipulative grooming, and even physical measures like the needle Illumi used on Killua to limit his autonomy and alter his behavior. That’s not just sibling roughness; it’s psychological control meant to stamp out anything the family sees as a weakness — namely Killua’s desire for friendship and freedom after meeting Gon. Illumi treats Killua harshly because he believes (or has been told to believe) that attachments make assassins sloppy. He’s protective in the strangest, most ownership-driven way: keeping Killua within the family’s expectations so the Zoldyck name isn’t tarnished and so Killua stays ‘useful.’
