You can't scroll for five minutes without tripping over a new recommendation. The algorithm pushes certain books so hard that half my list is just a sea of cartoon covers and the same five tropes repeated.

It's not all bad though. I never would've picked up 'The Seven Year Slip' without seeing that one clip of the fridge scene, and now it's a favorite. The downside is the homogenization – everyone's reading the same ten KU titles, and smaller authors or different genres get drowned out. My TBR feels less personal now, more like a collective homework assignment from the internet.

I just wish the hype machine came with a better filter for what actually matches my taste, not just what's trending.

For me, it acts like a quality sieve. If a book has 100K videos praising its third-act conflict or a specific character moment, it suggests a certain level of crowd-pleasing execution. That social proof cuts through the overwhelming KU catalog. My list is shorter but filled with books that have proven they can deliver a shared emotional punch, which is what I'm usually after anyway.

Honestly? It's made mine a complete mess. I'll see a compelling edit, instantly borrow the book, then get distracted by the next viral thing before I even start chapter two. My Kindle library is a graveyard of good intentions.

There's a weird pressure, too. If you haven't read the 'it' book of the month, you feel behind on the conversation. My list is less about what I genuinely want to read and more about keeping up with a cycle of content that moves faster than I can possibly read. It's exciting but exhausting.

How do booktok books influence readers’ TBR lists and reviews?

I've caught myself scrolling BookTok and suddenly my entire plan for the year is upended. It’s wild how one video with the right music and a ‘you’ll-never-see-it-coming’ whisper can push something to the top of your pile. My shelves are full of books I wouldn't even glance at in a store, all because someone described the emotional devastation so convincingly. The collective hype creates this urgency, like if you don’t read it now you’re missing out on a cultural moment, which is honestly a bit stressful. What’s weirder is how it reshapes reviews, mine included. I find myself rating based on how much a book delivered on the specific trope or scene that was promised online. If it’s marketed as a heartbreaking romance and I didn’t cry, I’m almost disappointed even if the writing was solid. The discourse around certain books gets so loud it’s hard to separate your own feelings from the echo chamber. I’ve given five stars to books I’ve already forgotten, and hated on others just because they didn’t live up to the impossible hype my feed built.
