Who Are The Main Characters In Goblin No Suana Story?

Late at night I keep replaying some of the calmer scenes from ‘goblin no suana’. Primarily three people: the main character, somewhat pragmatic but mostly wary, trying to make his way through, often in a somewhat ambiguous moral fashion. The companion who starts off as the person being rescued, slowly but surely transforms into a very solid and resolute partner. And then the older mentor figure, whose past actions haunt his every word of advice.

The goblins serve as a good threat and also as a good narrative mirror for the humans to test their decisions with. Even in very dark scenes there are moments of very grounded human moments that make them hit even harder. They are a compact but rich cast, and I think what is most compelling is the believable relationships between the characters even in the bleakest of scenarios.

I really like the small cast of ‘goblin no suana’. There’s no need for a huge number of characters in order to have incredibly powerful emotional scenes, all of which center around the main young adventurer. He is a practical, scarred (both physically and mentally) character who goes from place to place. He’s not necessarily a hero in the classical sense, but as the story progresses you get to see his many motivations for journeying (wonder, survival, to protect others). And he grows. He becomes both more ruthless and more compassionate. It’s very powerful to read.

The main female character is a vulnerable but complex and powerful character who will grow beyond her initial portrayal as a character to be rescued. The older mentor is a grizzled warrior/adventurer who does his best to offer advice and affection to the young protege. The healer/cutis is similarly a complex and potentially conflicted character. He could be a party member who adds to the moral burden of their quest. The final core character is the rogue-esque sidekick. He’s good for comic relief as well as supplying the party with crucial skills to survive the dangers they face.

One of the things I most appreciate is the development of the relationships in the story. The negative and hurtful things that happen as a result of betrayals are still more painful than anything else. The development of alliances is hard-won. The reader is given glimpses of the simple lives of the villagefolk before the story, and they leave lasting impressions as well. And in the end, it is the drama of how people deal with the consequences of crossing a line that lingers long after the story is finished and one has returned to their real life, pondering the price of their own survival.

Her development is one of the best aspects of the entire story.

Supporting characters have distinct roles within the main framework of the narrative. The old warrior functions as something of a teacher; giving the lead adventurer moral and tactical guidance as they journey through the world. The gentle healer functions as something of a counterbalance to the more violent actions of the group, and the thief/scout brings humor as well as insight into the small-time hustles of the back alleys of cities. Even the various villagers and supporting allies that make up the bulk of the creatures that the goblins encounter in their daily lives are fully-realized, with their own roles to play in the greater whole of the story.

What really stuck with me is the mix of grit and tenderness the human characters display in their interractions as they try to make it through each day. Even scenes where the characters are at rest arguing with each other, or simply eating a meal and socializing can be very revealing and even as powerful as a key battle scene.
