It's worth checking an app's settings. Sometimes sync is disabled by default for data-saving reasons. I've seen people complain an app doesn't sync, only to find they had 'sync reading progress' turned off in a buried menu. Always dive into the settings after installing a new reader. Look for 'Cloud Sync,' 'Backup,' 'Reading Position,' or similar terms. Enable everything. The feature is only as good as your configuration.
My two cents: don't overlook the browser-based readers. Sites like Archive of Our Own have a 'Mark for Later' and 'History' function that works across any device where you're logged in, effectively syncing your progress in a broad sense. For serialized platforms like Royal Road, your 'Follows' list and the site's memory of the last chapter you opened are persistent. It's not as granular as 'page 247 of 500,' but for chapter-based content, it's often enough. Sometimes the simplest web-based solution avoids app headaches altogether.
One subtle benefit of reliable sync is that it encourages 'opportunistic reading.' Waiting in line? Pull out your phone, read a page or two. Later, at home, continue on a bigger screen. Without sync, you'd likely just check social media instead because the friction of finding your place is too high. A good sync feature turns all your idle moments into potential reading sessions. It fundamentally increases your reading volume by lowering the activation energy required to start.
Sometimes the problem isn't the app, it's the book file. A poorly formatted EPUB with weird page breaks or no proper chapter markers can confuse a sync algorithm. I've had books where sync placed me at the 'nearest' chapter start, which was five pages off. Ensuring your sideloaded books have clean metadata and a proper table of contents can improve sync accuracy dramatically. Tools like Calibre are essential for curating a personal library that plays nice with these features.
Honestly, after trying them all, I keep a simple text file note for each book with the percentage or location. Old school. Then I can open that note on any device and jump to the spot in whatever app I'm using. It gives me freedom to use different apps for different books without worrying about their sync systems. It's a few seconds of manual labor, but it's 100% reliable and under my control. Sometimes the lowest-tech solution is the most robust.

I woke up inside a novel, and not even as an important character.
I became a pretty background extra in a smut novel.
My brother, however, was the only normal person in the entire story.
His character setting was the one man the soft, delicate heroine could never win over.
He was the cold, unattainable Prince Charming she could never conquer.
When the heroine cried and confessed her love, he was studying.
When she offered him her whole heart and body, he was busy starting a company.
When she spiraled into scandals and nightlife, he was already a billionaire, calm and untouchable.
I thought he would live a quiet, ascetic life forever.
Until one night, I walked in on him at midnight…
holding a piece of clothing I recognized all too well, murmuring a name over and over, a name so familiar that my scalp tingled.
Awakening to a bewildering and astonishing reality, Seraphina found herself in an extraordinary situation: she had transmigrated into her own novel, stepping into the shoes of a character she had meticulously crafted.
The male lead in her story was notoriously elusive, challenging to approach, and the master of a harem. Seraphina, now Zephyrine Everlynn, unexpectedly found herself among the women in his harem.
It was utterly absurd! Promptly leaving the harem, Seraphina used her knowledge to help others win the male lead's heart, all for the right price.
But why did the male lead continuously find his way back to her?
Adrian died believing the villain deserved a happy ending.
Then he woke up inside his favorite novel—not as the hero, but as the Crown Prince destined to kill the Demon Lord.
Bound by a ruthless World System that demands the original tragedy, Adrian must choose between following the story... or saving the man who was never meant to be loved.
But every attempt to change fate awakens an ancient soul bond, and the more Adrian saves the villain, the more dangerously obsessed Cassian Nyx becomes with him.
When the entire world wants the Demon Lord dead... will Adrian rewrite destiny, or die trying?
Has anyone compared the actual speed? I did an unscientific test between Kindle, Google Play Books, and Apple Books on the same Wi-Fi. I'd read a page, immediately force-quit the app, open it on another device. Kindle was consistently fastest, updating within 2-3 seconds. Google Play took 5-10 seconds. Apple Books was instant between my iPhone and iPad but obviously doesn't work outside that. For the impatient, those seconds matter!
I just ask my partner what page they're on if we're reading the same book on different devices. Low-tech social sync. Works every time, and we get to talk about the book. Recommend.
If you're reading fanfiction, the FanFiction.Net app has a decent sync feature for your favorites and reading history across devices. It's platform-specific, of course, but for those deep in a particular fandom, it's a lifesaver to not lose your place in a 200-chapter epic.
Remember when Marvin was the hot iOS app for this? It had amazing custom sync. Then the developer disappeared. That's the risk with small, independent apps. I now lean towards apps that use a sync method I can control (my own cloud) or are backed by a large platform.
