How Do You Read Keeper Of The Lost Cities In Order Including Short Stories?
For fellow fans of Shannon Messenger's book series: Do the novellas and bonus short stories fit into a specific reading timeline? I'd hate to miss any character moments.

I disagree with those saying the shorts are non-essential. Some of the relationship development, especially for certain ships, happens in subtle moments in those stories. You miss out on nuanced character dynamics if you skip them. For the full picture, find an integrated order online. Yes, it's more work, but the payoff is a richer, more cohesive understanding of everyone's motivations and relationships. It turns a great series into an epic, fully-realized world.

The series isn't finished yet, which makes order guides a moving target. A new short story collection or a new main book could drop anytime. For now, the safe, complete order is the nine main novels (ending with 'Stellarlune') and the two short compilations ('Unleashed', 'Unraveled'). Check the author's website for updates. She's very engaged and will point fans in the right direction when new material comes out.

My kid is reading these and asked me this exact question. I did some digging and, putting it simply: Read the big books with numbers on the spine in order. There's one called 'Unlocked' that's a half-number (8.5), read that after Book 8. The other books with 'Tales from the Lost Cities' on the cover are story collections; read those after you're done with all the numbered ones. That's the simplest way to explain it to a young reader without overwhelming them.

The beauty of the short stories is their standalone nature. You can pick up 'Unleashed' and read any story in any order. They're perfect for when you have ten minutes and want a quick hit of the Lost Cities. This makes the 'order' question largely moot for them. For the main series, obviously numerical order. For the shorts, think of them as a candy bowl—dip in whenever you want a sweet treat.

The series has such intricate plotting and foreshadowing. Reading the short stories sometimes feels like getting secret keys to unlock earlier mysteries. A line in Book 3 might seem innocuous, but a short story published years later re-contextualizes it. That's why, for maximum 'aha!' moments, reading in publication order is so rewarding. You experience the reveals as the fandom did, in real time.

YEARNERS delivers addictive short stories filled with building tension and passionate moments.
Each tale is a complete journey spread over 7 to 10 chapters.
You’ll find slow teasing that leads to overwhelming encounters, touches turning into strong claims, and characters who lose themselves completely in the wrong person.
Expect deep emotional games, secret conflicts, and characters who give in to what they know is wrong.
Open the book… if you dare to surrender.
A collection of passionate encounters, forbidden attractions, and complicated relationships. From former lovers reunited by fate to rivals caught in unexpected temptation, each story explores desire, emotion, and the choices that change lives forever.
***This is the third book in the series***
I lost the girl, the love of my life.
I lost my family.
Now I’m lost.
I thought after the war for Riocht, life would get back to normal.
I was so very, very wrong.
Kellen, now King of the werewolves, thought after Lamia and Mathias claimed the throne and became the King and Queen of shifters, life would go on as normal. That he would rule his kingdom and search for his own mate and live happily ever after.
There was still so much to do. He still hadn’t completely taken control of his position as King, leaving his father’s Beta and Delta in charge. Kingdoms and packs still needed to be repaired; he still needed to be officially crowned.
And he still needed to grieve the death of his parents.
Kellen wakes up to find himself on a boat, going to Goddess knows where and the last thing he remembers is saying goodbye to Lamia and heading home with Mike.
When he finds himself in a strange land, sold to a bloody thirsty Alpha and his deranged Luna, for their packs entertainment, his title, means nothing. A man who cares only for three things; the games, the money, and blood; the more shed the better.
While Lamia and Mike search for him on the wrong continent Kellen is thrust into the Gladiator games. Kellen fights for his survival and the lives of many, including one beautiful girl who has captured his heart and has been promised to another as their chosen mate.
Can Kellen survive the Gladiator games when the odds are stacked against him, save the people and claim the mate the moon goddess promised him?
**This is book 3 in The Delta's Daughter series**
This is a book of shifter short stories. All of these stories came from readers asking me to write stories about animals they typically don't see as shifters.
The stories that are in this series are -
Welcome to the Jungle,
Undercover,
The Storm,

This author once failed as a heroine… and returned as something entirely different.
Not as a savior.
But as the villain.
And she didn’t come back empty-handed.
She brought secrets.
She brought sins.
She brought a story that was never meant to be read.
Sinners & Saints is not just a collection of dark romance stories—
It is a confession.
A warning.
And a door best left unopened.
Within these pages lie twisted love stories where desire and destruction walk hand in hand, and every choice comes with a cost.
So the question is simple:
Will you turn away…
or step inside anyway?

CONTENT WARNING ⚠️
These are not innocent stories. What's inside these pages is not for the faint hearted. You've been warned. Deliciously.
****
Sins Worth Keeping is a collection of stories about men who want what they cannot have and reach for it anyway. In dark corners, empty locker rooms, late nights that last too long and hotel rooms that know too many secrets.
These are not love stories that play it safe. These are the ones that burn.
Find your quietest corner. Turn the pages and try to breathe normally.
Fair warning — once you start, stopping will feel like the hardest thing you've ever done.
Don't say you weren't warned. ⚠️🖤
Ebook platforms can be tricky! If you buy the novella collection, it might just bundle them in alphabetical order, which is useless. 'Everblaze Heist' would come before 'Forget-Me-Not'. Double-check the table of contents or description to see if they're listed in the correct narrative sequence before you start reading page one.
I saw a YouTube video where someone did a flip-through of the collector's edition. They specifically showed the Keefe short story pages. So visual confirmation: it exists in that edition. The video title was something like 'KOTLC Flashback Collector's Edition Unboxing'.
That's a good way to 'see' it before you buy, if you're unsure. You can get a sense of the length and how it's formatted in the book. The person in the video was super excited about it.
The correct order is the one that gets you reading and loving the story. For 99% of people, that's the publication order. For the 1% who want to experiment on a reread, more power to them. But first impressions matter. You only get one chance to be shocked by a reveal or to fall in love with a character as intended. Don't risk muddying that by trying to be clever with the sequence. Trust the author's roadmap.
sips tea I love watching these reading order debates. It's the same energy as 'Star Wars' machete order. Everyone has a strong opinion, and everyone thinks their way is best. Personally, I just read whatever my library has available when I get around to it. The story still made sense to me. Maybe I'm just not a detail person.
I disagree with those saying the bonus scenes aren't important. Some of them provide crucial insight into Fitz's or Keefe's motivations. But even I admit they're not essential for plot comprehension. For a first read, you can skip them. For a re-read, integrating them adds a rich new layer. So maybe your second journey through the series can be the 'definitive' order with all the snippets. For now, keep it simple and linear.
Honestly, just ask your local librarian or bookseller. They'll point you to the shelf where the series is filed in order. It's 'Keeper of the Lost Cities', then 'Exile', 'Everblaze', 'Neverseen', 'Lodestar', 'Nightfall', 'Flashback', 'Legacy', 'Stellarlune', and 'Unlocked'. The companion guides are separate. Sometimes we make things harder than they need to be by overthinking the 'expanded universe' aspect. For a middle-grade series, the primary path is clearly marked. Start at the beginning, and you won't go wrong.
1. Keeper of the Lost Cities
2. Exile
3. Everblaze
4. Neverseen
5. Lodestar
6. Nightfall
7. Flashback
8. Legacy
9. Unlocked
That's the list. Print it out. Stick it on your fridge. The debate isn't about the order, it's about which book is the best (it's 'Everblaze', fight me). But you need to read them all to have that debate properly.
