Project Gutenberg doesn't have it because it's not in the public domain in the US. I've seen people ask about that. For a free and legal online read, check if your school or university provides online access through their library portal. Many have subscriptions to databases like JSTOR or ProQuest that include full literary texts for educational use. It's not the most user-friendly reading experience, but it's a solid source.

I'm gonna go against the grain here and say that while finding a free online chapter is easy, it might not be the best way to first experience this book. Harper Lee's prose in that opening chapter is so specific and atmospheric—the slow build in Maycomb, Scout's voice. Reading it in a clunky web browser with pop-ups is a disservice. The physical book is cheap at any used bookstore.
If you're absolutely set on digital and free, the library app method is the only one I'd recommend. Anything else feels disrespectful to the work. The first chapter sets the entire tone, and you want that to be immersive, not fighting a website's layout. Sometimes 'free' costs you the right atmosphere.

Okay, this is a bit of a workaround, but it's perfectly legal and often overlooked. Major retailers like Amazon, Google Play Books, and Barnes & Noble always offer free samples. Just search for 'To Kill a Mockingbird' on their sites, and you should see a 'Read Sample' or 'Preview' button. It'll typically include the first few chapters, definitely Chapter 1. You don't need a subscription for the sample, just an account (which is free).
You're reading the official, professionally formatted digital edition. The downside is you can't always read it directly in a web browser; sometimes they push you toward their app. But if your goal is just to check out the first chapter for free and legally, this is a super reliable method. It's how I often test if I like the writing style before committing to a purchase or library hold.

Man, I see this question pop up all the time, and honestly, I always give the same advice. Skip the sketchy aggregator sites that just copy-paste text. Your best bet is to use your public library's digital service, like Libby or Hoopla. You'll need a library card, but they're free to get. They have the ebook, and you can usually borrow it immediately to read right in your browser without downloading anything. It's the official version, supports authors and libraries, and isn't littered with weird ads.
I tried reading a chapter on one of those free book sites once, and halfway through, the formatting went haywire and paragraphs started repeating. Super frustrating when you're trying to get into a classic like this. With the library app, it's clean, it's complete, and you can pick up where you left off if you decide to get the full book later. Seriously, saves you so much headache.

Honestly, just search 'To Kill a Mockingbird PDF'. Many educational and school websites host the first chapter as a standalone PDF for study purposes. It's usually a clean, ad-free document meant for students. That's how I read it again last year when I wanted to reference the opening. It's out there if you look past the commercial book sites and toward academic resources.

Four years ago, I watched Alpha Adrian slaughter my parents and destroy the Nightfall Pack. Everyone I loved turned to ash and blood that night—everyone except Asher, my best friend who pulled me from the flames.
Now I'm infiltrating his pack as a slave vengeance in my heart. I've waited four years for this moment. Four years to get close enough to kill him just as he killed my parents.
But fate is a cruel bitch.
The mate bond snapped the moment I entered his quarters, binding me to the one man I swore to kill. My body betrays me, craving his touch while my mind screams for his death. And when Adrian finally feels it too, when he discovers I'm the last survivor of the pack he destroyed, everything changes.
He says he needs me. That I'm the cure to an ailment slowly killing him.
I need him too—he's the only one who can heal my broken wolf and help me shift again.
The bond doesn't lie. And neither does the truth I'm starting to uncover about that bloody night.
My heart is torn between my best friend who saved me and the mate who killed my parents and holds the key to making me whole again.

"He knew me from the moment I stepped through the broken window.Studying me.Watching me.Changing me.I was unaware of him at first; my life was too out of control to notice. The constant moving and lack of money after Mom divorced Dad was turning her into a different person. All she did was drink and she was now this angry person I didn't want to know. But once I stepped through the window inside that house, I could feel the peace surrounding me. Hugging my body as if it had arms. Protecting me. Loving me. It was like the house knew what I craved and it felt too good to question any of it. So I went back, day after day. Jane walked towards the forbidden building with a clenched fist. She looked scared at first but that didn't stop her curiosity about looking into the building she had been forbidden to reach.
She looked back to see if any of the men were around to know of her sudden disappearance but nobody seemed to know since the alarm bells hadn't rung.
She breathe out heavily and touched the door knob but before she could twist it open, her hand was yanked off it and she was pushed backward.
She looked up only to meet the face of one person she had been trying to avoid. Allen stared coldly at the woman in front of him and stepped forward like a lion trying to stalk its prey. Jane looked terrified and gulped down with uneasiness.
" What are you doing here? " Allen asked with his usual cold tone.
" I was...uhm...just... "
" Haven't I warned you not to step closer to this building huh? But it seems you are the stubborn pet. " Allen interrupted while continuing his walk towards her.
" No...no, I was just being curious, that's all. " Jane replied as her back hits the wall. Allen trapped her in between.
" Have you ever heard that curiosity kills the cat? " Allen smirked dangerously and Jane knew that she was in a long torture for the night.

Don't miss out on this book. You will love it.

The truth of what happened begins the unfold little by little, until Ezra reveals a big secret, and soon enough, Lilith learns that she is much more special than she previously had thought.
In a world where secrets flourish, betrayal thrives, and murder prevails, will love and friendship survive? Or will fate have other plans?
One of my all-time favorite classics is 'To Kill a Mockingbird', and I totally get why you'd want to dive into Harper Lee's masterpiece. While I adore physical books, I understand the appeal of digital access. You can often find it on platforms like Project Gutenberg or Open Library, which offer free legal downloads of public domain works.
Just a heads-up though—since copyright laws vary, it might not be available everywhere. Libraries sometimes partner with apps like Libby or OverDrive, where you can borrow the ebook with a valid library card. It’s worth checking out local library resources before resorting to sketchy sites. I’ve stumbled upon dodgy copies before, and nothing ruins a great story like formatting nightmares or missing pages!
