His books are the literary equivalent of a well-made burger. You know exactly what you're getting, it's satisfying, and it's done with skill. You don't go to Goldberg for experimental prose; you go for a solid, entertaining story. Start wherever the premise sounds tastiest to you.

The easiest way to remember it is as a trilogy of sorts, even though the stories aren't connected. Phase One: 'The Walk' (2004). Phase Two: 'Watch Me Die' (2006). Phase Three: 'King City' (2012). After that, he entered his collaborative and series-building phase. Those three books are where he honed his voice outside of TV tie-ins. You can see his progression, too. 'The Walk' is pure survival spectacle. 'Watch Me Die' is a tighter, more psychological thriller. 'King City' is a deeper dive into character and police politics. They're all great, and they show his range before he settled into the longer-form series storytelling that defines his current output. I'd love to see him circle back to a pure standalone between Eve Ronin books.

I read them all last year. The order is definitely 'Lost Hills', 'Bone Canyon', 'Gated Prey', 'Movieland', 'Malibu Burning'. There's no ambiguity. The series follows Eve's career chronologically. Each case is standalone, but her life isn't. You see her grapple with the fallout of previous events, both professionally and personally. The dynamics with her colleagues shift. Reading them out of order would make those shifts seem sudden or unmotivated. Start with 'Lost Hills' to see why she's such an underdog, then follow her journey.

Publication order always works, but I accidentally read 'Killer Thriller' first and didn't feel lost. Goldberg writes each thriller to stand alone, with the mystery wrapped up by the end. You'll miss some background on how Ian and Margo met, but the core of their banter and the action is self-contained. That said, going back to 'True Fiction' afterwards filled in the gaps and made certain callbacks funnier. So it's flexible, but order is preferred for full effect.

I'm curious if the audiobooks are any good and if they follow the same order. Sometimes audiobook releases can be weird. But I assume the order of the content is identical. Has anyone listened to them? Are they narrated by someone who sounds like Monk?

The emotional through-line is more important than the plot chronology. Dave's grief, his rage at injustice, his love for his daughter Alafair, his turbulent friendship with Clete—these are the constants. You can pick up on those emotions in any book. The specific cases are almost secondary to the state of Dave's heart and soul in that moment.
So read for the feeling. Which book's description hints at the emotional state you want to explore? A story about his past? A story about a current devastating event? Let that guide your choice, not a number on a list.

Sometimes the best way is to ask a librarian. They can pull up the series in their database, see all the titles in the correct order, and even help you place holds on them. It's a free service, and they love helping people navigate series.
Librarians are underutilized resources for this kind of thing. They won't judge you for not knowing the order; they'll be happy to help you find it. Plus, they might know if any of the books are harder to find or if there are omnibus editions. Never underestimate a good librarian.

Don't overthink it—just read them as they were released. The character arcs are subtle but present; Hayley's kids age, her friendships deepen, and her culinary career shifts.
Skipping around might confuse those small, ongoing threads. I tried reading a later book first once and kept wondering why certain relationships felt oddly distant. Going back to the start filled in those gaps.
It's a cozy series, so it's not like you'll be lost in a complex mythos, but the intended emotional rhythm works best in order.
