Sometimes I wish there was a book that was just the 'exploring the weird alien artifact' part of sci-fi, without any of the human drama getting in the way. Like, give me 300 pages of scientists taking core samples and measuring strange energy signatures. ‘Rendezvous with Rama’ comes closest, but I want a whole series of that. The mystery is always better than the explanation.

‘Good Omens’ isn’t pure sci-fi, it’s apocalyptic comedy, but it’s such a gentle, hilarious gateway into speculative fiction. The core duo—an angel and a demon trying to stop the apocalypse because they’ve grown fond of their lives on Earth—is timeless. The humor is whip-smart and deeply British.

It shows that genre fiction can be clever, silly, and warm all at once. The footnotes, the asides, the personification of the Four Horsemen (including Pollution replacing Pestilence) are all brilliant. It makes the end of the world feel like a charmingly mismanaged village fete. Anyone who enjoys it can then easily slide into Pratchett’s Discworld or Gaiman’s darker fantasies.

I have to mention ‘The Moon is a Harsh Mistress’. It’s a revolution story—Lunar colonists rebelling against Earth—narrated by a man with a wonderfully distinctive, fragmented slang. The hook is the characters: a one-armed computer technician, a radical professor, and a supercomputer that develops a sense of humor.

Heinlein makes the politics of revolution engaging and personal. The tech (like the sentient computer Mike) feels integral to the plot, not just set dressing. It’s a cornerstone of libertarian sci-fi, but you don’t need to buy into the politics to get swept up in the underdog story. TANSTAAFL!

For something lighter and more adventure-focused, the 'Vorkosigan Saga' by Lois McMaster Bujold is fantastic. I'd start with 'The Warrior's Apprentice', which introduces Miles Vorkosigan, a physically disabled noble in a militaristic society who outthinks everyone. The books mix space opera, mystery, romance, and comedy. Bujold's character work is top-tier, so you get deeply invested in the people, which makes the sci-fi setting feel like home. You can jump around the series, but that's a great entry point.

My top recommendation would always be 'The Murderbot Diaries'. Starting with 'All Systems Red'. It's short, which is a huge plus for testing the waters. You're not committing to a 900-page doorstopper. Murderbot's voice is incredibly relatable—it's grumpy, efficient, and just wants to be left alone to watch media, which is a mood we can all understand. The sci-fi elements (rogue AIs, corporate-controlled space, augmented humans) are presented through its very practical, often exasperated perspective, so the world-building feels organic, not like an info-dump. The action sequences are clear and thrilling. Best of all, since it's a series of mostly novellas on KU, you can burn through them quickly and feel that accomplishment. If you like character-focused stories with a dry sense of humor, this is your entry point. It got my partner, who never touched sci-fi, completely hooked.

It's worth checking out some of the newer award winners. Books that win the Hugo, Nebula, or Arthur C. Clarke awards often represent the most accessible, crowd-pleasing, and thought-provoking work of the year. Recent winners like 'A Memory Called Empire' or 'Network Effect' (a Murderbot novel) are fantastic indicators of where the genre is thriving and are very reader-friendly.

Which best sci fi and fantasy books of all time are ideal for new genre readers?

What's the rush with 'all time'? Sometimes the best book is the one that just came out and is buzzing. It's alive in the current cultural conversation. Look at the recent buzz around something like 'The Will of the Many' by James Islington. It's a new release with that familiar 'magical academy' hook but with Roman-inspired politics and a relentless pace. Starting with a current hit connects you to a living, breathing fandom right away.
