Memoir-style short story collections, where each chapter is a self-contained anecdote from the author's life, can be excellent. They lack the plot-driven urgency of fiction. 'Tiny Beautiful Things' by Cheryl Strayed, adapted into an audiobook with different narrators for the letters and responses, has a compassionate, conversational tone that feels like a wise friend reassuring you.
It's emotionally engaging but in a supportive, open-hearted way. The advice column format means each piece resolves with some insight or comfort, which is a lovely feeling to fall asleep with. It's not sugar-coated, but it's fundamentally humane.

Look for stories with a frame narrative. 'The Canterbury Tales' on audiobook, or 'The Decameron'. The tales within tales create a nice distance, and the older English (in a good translation) has a lulling rhythm. It feels like you're being told a story within a story, which adds a layer of calm.

For a truly minimalist approach, look for recordings of public domain short stories on Librivox. The narration quality varies wildly, as it's volunteer-based, but when you find a good reader, it's magical. Some volunteers have wonderfully calm, clear voices perfect for bedtime. And it's all free.
You can find entire collections of Chekhov or de Maupassant stories. The themes can be melancholic, but the prose is so beautiful and the pacing so deliberate that I find it relaxing. It's like listening to literature from another time, without any modern commercial interruptions or hype.

I've had success with historical fiction shorts. 'The Last Letter of Your Name' or similar romantic period pieces. The conflict is often emotional and internal, resolved with a letter or a realization. The language tends to be more formal and flowing, which helps.

Short story audiobooks are a bedtime savior because they have a defined endpoint, preventing that 'just one more chapter' spiral that ruins your sleep schedule. I lean toward gentle, lyrical narration rather than intense soundscapes; Neil Gaiman reading his own 'Smoke and Mirrors' collection is a personal favorite for that reason. His voice is so calm and inviting, and the stories are just fantastical enough to drift into without causing nightmares.
Some anthologies like 'The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories' have different narrators, so you can sample various styles depending on your mood. The key is consistent audio quality—nothing jolts you awake like a sudden volume shift.

What if your next filthy favorite story started with a moan… and ended with “Yes, Daddy”?
Then take a deep breath… •ON MY KNEES, DADDY• is ready to leave you soaked, breathless, and aching for more.
This is a raw, erotic collection of dominant men who don’t ask—they take. And their submissives? Oh, they beg. They kneel. They come apart, over and over.
Inside, you'll find stories that cross every line: hotel-room threesomes, forbidden stepdaddy fantasies, one-night stands, rough office sex, taboo roleplay, and the kind of dirty stories that will have your thighs clenched and your fingers wandering.
I'm a huge horror fan, but obviously, that's terrible bedtime material. My weird loophole is cosmic horror or weird fiction from the early 20th century. Lovecraft's stories, for instance, are so densely written with archaic language that they become abstract, atmospheric noise. The narrator often has a plummy, old-timey radio voice describing indescribable horrors, and the combination is weirdly soothing. The prose is so thick it's like verbal mud; you can't possibly follow it when you're drowsy. You just get snippets of 'cyclopean architecture' and 'non-Euclidean angles' and you're out.
For something completely screen-free, just play the audio from channels like 'Storynory' or 'The Story Circle'. They’re podcasts, but you can access them via YouTube as well. The audio-only format means you can turn the screen off completely. The stories are original fairy tales and classics, told with lovely, clear narration. This has been a game-changer for car rides that turn into impromptu naps, too.
