He held the jar and cried tears of joy like a child who'd gotten the best birthday present of his life. He wouldn't stop making promises, both to me and himself.

“No. Frosted Flakes. We suffer in sweetness here.” I chuckled. A real one this time. She wrapped her arms around me in a tight hug, and I melted into it. For a second, I imagined us frozen there. No noise. No chaos. No bathtub. Just the comfort of arms that didn’t need to understand to care. When she pulled back, she looked at me like I was fragile glass. “Promise me,” she said, “no more disappearing under water.” I nodded, even though I wasn’t sure I could keep that promise.

Autumn asked. I tried touching her to calm her down, but she just moved away. I was sad about that. "Autumn, don't you trust me?” I asked. “I already explained to you that it was nothing like autumn. Just believe me,” I said, basically pleading to her at this point. “Nothing is ever going to happen between Sunny and me, I promise,” I added, reassuring her. She did not say anything as she looked at me, tears already filling her beautiful eyes. “Autumn, please don't cry,” I said, pulling her closer to hug her.

No promise wrapped in spectacle. Just certainty.

He made her a goddamn fool. “If you had told me earlier, I wouldn't have been angry. I would be hurt, yes. But to fool me like this? I feel so stupid, Aidan.” Autumn tried her very best not to breakdown. She calmed her aching heart before continuing, “'Didn't you promise me before that you would tell me right away if you found another? But you broke your promise.” Her voice cracked and her tears were threatening to fall, but she restrained herself from doing so. She shouldn’t cry in front of him again. He isn’t worthy of her tears. "I don't want to let you go, Autumn." She arched an eyebrow at him.

'I'll do something wonderful for him this morning. Autumn thought as she stood to go and watch the sunrise this morning. Autumn sat by the lake, looking up at the sky as the sun rose over the mountains and white clouds. The sight was breathtaking! She promised God she would talk to him more, thanking him for this beautiful earth and all the amenities that came along with it. She even talked to him about some of the stories Bastion's grandmother shared with him as a child. Autumn asked God questions about what she was learning from Bastion.

Glancing at the blinking red light ahead, she replied casually, "Alright." She said it, but she didn’t believe it. After being let down so many times, she’d grown numb. She no longer expected Julian to keep any promise he made. After all, every time he said he’d come home to be with her, something always came up—either a last-minute emergency or a phone call that pulled him away halfway. Autumn wandered around aimlessly for a while, grabbed a bite to eat, and only then remembered she was supposed to head home. Just seeing Julian would remind her of everything between him and Luna. It made her sick to her stomach.

She held her hand out again, wiggling her fingers a bit closer to Autumn’s face. Autumn’s gaze sharpened as she took her sister’s hand, examining the ring critically. It was smaller than the engagement ring Ivan had given Iris in her past life, but Autumn merely shrugged, releasing Iris’s hand with a flick. “What a lovely promise ring,” Autumn remarked loudly, letting her voice carry across the room. “I remember mine was just as small. Hopefully, your engagement ring will be bigger than this?” She cast a pointed glance at Iris’s hand, ensuring all eyes were drawn to the modest diamond.
