Haunting Romantics
Outside meant being alone when the sun dipped too low.
She pushed again, harder.
The hallway lights flared and then went dark.
Silence swallowed the house.
For a brief, terrible second, she felt herself slipping, the effort of holding everything together costing more than she had to give. Her form flickered weakly near him, barely an outline, barely present.
He turned toward her fully now.
“I can’t stay inside forever,” he said quietly.
His face held no anger. The clean planes of it were calm.
Forever.
She did not think of that word the way he did. Forever was already hers. She had been forever for years.
