David Foster Wallace Favorite Books Novels & Stories

I need to take time. I remember the small room I entered last time. I slowly opened the door and turned on the lampshade. The books on the table were still scattered. I tried to look and read each one of them. These are all interesting books. Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and a lot more. I tried to find something that might help me, but I found nothing.

They'd been bickering for an hour about who. "You really like that book, huh?" Xavier raised a teasing brow. I stuck my tongue at him. "If you must know, Mr Nosey," he gave me a playful scowl. "I love old books, Frankenstein and Dracula were some of my favorites, as well as the Brothers Grimm and Phantom of the Opera." Theo gave a confused look. "The Phantom is a book?" I laughed, grabbing my bag and finding the tattered paperback, the spine on it worn and the book folded easily from overreading.

She had poisoned herself and it was not only the alcohol's fault, but also the constant stress and exhaustion that had been accumulating for a long time. As she passed by the bookshelves, she decided to take some book to read. She was delighted with Matthew's collection. There were all the books written by Clive Cussler, one of her favourite writers, as well as a lot of books by Michael Crichton and Duncan Falconer. What surprised her more was to see all of John Grishams' novels.

He asks with something in his voice I can't quite identify. "You don't know." I say with a slight chuckle in my voice. "Just pick one." I watch idle as he sifts through all the books until he picks one. House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J Maas. "That is one of my favourite books. Although I might just be biased because I love her writing." I lean back in the chair with a satisfied look on my face. "What makes you love someone's writing?" He sits back in his chair and looks at me curiously.

By the time Momma passed I was married with a little one on the way, so my chance for college had passed, too. But I never stopped reading. Got me a nice little library out back, filled with all sorts of books crammed on bookshelves made by my own two hands. Books like Tom Sawyer, Edgar Allen Poe stories, Huck Finn and The King in Yellow, (that last one I don’t read much cause it always gives me strange dreams), some old mysteries, a clutch of Lovecraft’s books (they hurt my head, too, so I don’t read them much neither), my Hardy Boys books from growing up, and a whole bunch of newer ones by Stephen King and Dean Koontz. I asked him, and it hits me that I would not be able to answer half of those questions about Spin and I’m married to him! “I’m a donkey kong fan”, he says. “But both are Nintendo, so the vibe here is still good”. “How about books? Do you have a favorite?” I asked him. “Grapes of Wrath”, he says, surprising me. “You”? “The Great Gatsby”, I tell him. “So tragic”, he comments. “Speak for yourself”, I said, causing us both to laugh again. “Favorite movie?”, he then asks. “Love, Actually”, I told him.

Already much more soothing than sad songs and the sound of explosions. Tall shelves lined the walls, crammed with books. Of course this man had a library that looked like it belonged in an interior magazine spread. A low chandelier hung in the middle of the room above a long solid wood table, a few chairs, one couch in the corner with a folded throw. I walked along the first shelf, letting my fingertips brush the spines. Gold lettering, embossed titles, lettering already faded. The first row was full of classics. Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Dumas. Of course Zane owned a collection of depressed men who liked to write about sin and consequences. Fitting.

But she hoped that even Scar wouldn't sink so low as to ruin their wedding day. After everything ws organized and put away, Lacey headed out to the living room and poured herself a glass of wine. Then she eyed the wall of books on the far wall. John Grisham... Tom Clancy.... Then there were classics such as The Three Musketeers, The Man in the Iron Mask, both by Alexandre Dumas; as well as Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and From the Earth to the Moon, both by Jules Verne; and much more. It was an impressive collection. She chose From the Earth to the Moon and then sat on the couch to wait for Julien.

It wasn't all Jamal in there. "I used to read a lot of science fiction too, when I was your age. Do you have a favorite author?" I asked. He hesitated, and then said, "I like Isaac Asimov. He writes very smart stories." I nodded, impressed. Isaac Asimov was one of my favorite authors too, and I had read all of his books. "I like him too. He was a genius. Do you know that he wrote over 500 books, on different topics, not just science fiction?" I asked.

Emma said, walking deep into the living room. "Thanks." She walked to a set of shelves on the far side of the room, running her fingers over the spines of his books. A lot of them were classics, novels by Dickens, Voltaire, Dumas, Melville, and Hemingway. She smiled when her fingers ran over the spine of not one, but three copies of Mitchell's Gone with the Wind. There were modern novels, too, including Stephen King and Sidney Sheldon, but they didn't look as well read as some of the others.
